You speak the truth.

I agree and wish I didn't. I was so happy at the start of new Who.

Perhaps it's inevitable with all writers who stay too long. They start repeating the same tricks, and you see behind the magic, which leads to disappointment.

For me, RJD mostly left a bad taste behind him because of the things he said after killing Ianto (that the fans only liked Ianto because he was pretty, comparing it to SPN which I don't even watch, then making crude sexual remarks online about the actor when it was obvious to everyone else that he was likely to struggle to get another lead after his first major role had a major gay storyline, sadly still true, etc) but that's another story.

I'd have preferred RJD to just bow out with dignity, but I suppose that was never going to happen.

Not to mention him saying that the people who were upset about Ianto's death were just "hysterical women" (don't get me wrong, there were definitely some OTT reactions, but that was uncalled for). Yeah, plenty of people were annoyed with RTD after all that. The RTD-stans seem to have come back in force since Moffat too over DW.

He was so uncalled for in the aftermath after Ianto. At the time, he'd just been commissioned to do Torchwood in America, as far as I recall, and I think his head had blown up to Tardis-interior proportions, and he just decided to blow a huge raspberry to the UK fans because he was God's gift to writers.

I really enjoyed some of his earlier work like Second Coming, QaF, and even the controversial Bob & Rose. If I heard he'd written something now, I'd avoid it.

"The RTD-stans seem to have come back in force since Moffat too over DW"

The sad part is that 9 times out of 10 the RTD stans are also Tenth Doctor and Ten/Rose stans still bitter that DW isn't just about their beloved Tenth Doctor and his "romance" with Rose. I laughed so hard during the 50th episode when it turned out Rose wasn't Rose at all and the fans raged all over Tumblr. I think if that hadn't had happened they would have stayed away but oh no, Moffat dared to trifle with them *eye roll*

THIS! There's a fair bit of valid criticism to be made of Moffat, that's definitely true, but there's valid criticism to be made of RTD too, and I've seen too much Moffat criticism that ends with comments that not only completely whitewash RTD and ignore the problematic parts of his run, but also indicate extreme bitterness over Moffat not sharing RTD's painfully obvious Rose-boner. Gosh, Moffat ships the Doctor with the spunky blonde character he created, not the spunky blonde character his predecessor created to ship with the Doctor, what a jerk!

And yeah, as you say, Ten/Rose fans threw a giant tantrum when the 50th anniversary special wasn't 'The Ten and Rose movie, guest-starring Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman'. And you'd ask them 'well, what did you expect?' only to realize that yes, some of them honestly expected and felt entitled to a cinematic feature (that was supposed to be about celebrating fifty years of Doctors and companions) totally dedicated to their OTP.

He's not as good as people make him out to be, but he's still a 100 better at writing a coherent season arc than Moffat.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
No, he's exactly as good at it as Moffat is. RTD's season enders were always over-inflated massive letdowns (nothing has yet eclipsed the Doctor as both Dobby the Elf followed by David "Jesus" Tennant) same as Moffats are. RTD has even worse issues with women than Moffat too, just his issues were so blatant and up front no one bothered about bitching about them (Moff gets the flack because although he tries, to some he doesn't try hard enough), plus RTD had daddy issues so large you could see them from space.

Yes, the overtly racist, sexist pig is 100 times better as another racist, sexist pig. Sure. Keep telling yourself that.

I meant story-wise, they both have issues with racism and sexism, but the secret was about his writing specifically.

This is a secret?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of people still pine for RTD and say he was "better" at things than Moffat. And then whine when you point out that most of Martha's awesomeness, for example, is fanon and that she was underutilized and that RTD was a sexist and racist piece of shit, same as Moffat.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Now it is, because he's no longer the current showrunner and therefore amazing and representative of a time gone by. That's how DW fandom works.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think so. I'm certain there's more people out there willing to criticise JNT's era (80's Who) then there are people who applaud the changes.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
But you have to understand to the RTD stans nothing exists before then. You try and mention Classic WHo and they just brush you off.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
This is an unpopular opinion? Wow.

The Second Coming though.

every celebrity has some fans who are batshit insane.

I completely agree, OP.
