Me too.

I prefer it if the canon love interest is in the story. Being totally supportive and there to help their canon love interest come to terms with their feelings for whoever the auhor pairs them up with. There to help them with relationship and life troubles. Theres's little fic with this for any of my OTPs and it saddens me. I crave fic like this.

Well, fanfic writers don't need to write the canon love interests as they've already been covered in the original.

The main exceptions are where the canon pairings are badly written and it's like a red flag for fic writers to do better.

Of course they don't need to write them. I'd just like fic where they aren't bastardized as homophobic carictures who get in the way of an author's pet pairing. I'd just like fic where they're there being all supportive and aren't completely written off.

Okay, I was just explaining why it might not be so interesting for fanficers to write canon pairings.

I agree, it's weird if one half of a couple turns out to be a sudden raging homophobe when they were with a (bisexual?) all the time beforehand. I'm guessing this is mostly when the woman is dumped to allow the fandom slash pairing. Why would a (bisexual, at least) man have gone out with a woman like that in the first place? Wouldn't it have put him off her?

As well as being a hateful cliche, it just doesn't make sense in most scenarios.

Same with het couples too, actually. Hell, even in original stuff. I get bored when someone who's in the way of the Intended Twu Wuv suddenly goes evil or is flanderdized beyond belief so the other pairing can happen for real. You can do better than that. Your audience deserves better than that.

It's funny, I've read the scenario that you're describing and it actually annoys me no end. It doesn't matter how much you care about somebody, most people, if they get jilted for somebody else, will feel kind of unhappy and betrayed, at least for a while. Being able to set aside that unhappiness in order to play relationship counseling? That's basically sainthood.

I've always found those fics to be unbelievable in that they treat the canon love interest as an author stand-in and basically reduce them to egging on the Pure Love with the (usually slash) other ship, instead of like a character with their own life and desires.

I suppose I'm not explaining myself properly. Here goes, like in one of my fandoms, there's a character that was clearly supposed to be a love interest but they didn't get together. Nobody did. She cares for him, yes, but I highly doubt she'd feel betrayed her jilted if her love interest got together in a fic with someone else. I'd think she'd be supportive and I'd love fic that doesn't leave out their friendship and just completely writes her out or worse.

Plus, it isn't like the fic has to start with them breaking up or act like they got together in canon in the first place. And I know what kind of fic you're talking about, it bugs me too. I'm talking about fic where their friendship or previous relationship isn't erased or downplayed. They can still be a fully fleshed out character with their own needs and desires yet still be supportive of theor friend. Granted, not many authors can pull it off.

I hope I explained myself a bit better. If not, then I'm not sure how I can convey what I mean.

Really, really depends on the nature of the relationship. I was thrilled when my ex started dating someone else after we broke up because the breakup was due to me not having as strong feelings for him as he did for me. I was glad he found someone who liked him back just as much as she liked him.

(They got married, ultimately, so she was a much better choice for him than I was.)
