Re: What is something you hate doing but everyone you know loves?

Selfies or at least posting every single and last personal selfie online.

I can see posting a selfie proving that you made it to the summit of Mt. Everest or posting a selfie with the Pope proving you met him. But the umpteenth in front of the bathroom mirror selfie for that day or even that week just cause?

No.

I think I hate it because it is the ultimate begging for applause for the mundane. And I hate that, praising the ordinary rather than demanding the extraordinary. It's the equivalent of giving any a ribbon to every kindergatner for participating.

My sister posts selfies all the time on FB. I eventually had to block her posts! :C

I don't hate it for those reasons; I just really don't like my face.

I don't post any, but that's because I can't get myself to look nice in them.

Though, I'm always a bit concerned for people who post them publicly, like on tumblr and twitter.

100% agreement. It feels like people are fishing for compliments or an egoboo for... what? Standing in front of a mirror? Getting up and getting dressed? Having a face?

I like to celebrate the mundane. Life is in the details.

I've taken a lot of selfies in the past (mostly drawn them) and many of my favourite artworks involve selfies as well. Rembrandt, Van Gogh, etc.

I understand that a lot of people find this self-absorbed, but the only subject we really have permission to take pictures of is ourselves.

Nice try re: linking self-portraits and selfies, but we know that if people taking selfies put as much work and thought into taking them as Van Gogh did in self portraits, those would not be the annoying, shallow selfies people complain about.

"The only subject we really have permission to take pictures of is ourselves"? You don't need any New Agey navel-gazing philosophy to take interesting photos. Just don't take them of other people without permission. Also? People give permission for photographers to use them as subjects all the time. See: models.

This. People who can't be bothered to pay attention to common things just annoy me.

It's not my thing but I don't mind that other people like it, but I also don't have anyone on my facebook/instagram that posts like 20 a day or anything.

I'm not a huge picture taker in general (selfies included, and if I do take one I don't share it), but I can understanding taking pictures of yourself occasionally. Sharing them with the whole world again and again confuses me though. (And makes me worry about the person's privacy.)

They can be cute, but...I think some people take too many of them.

I follow someone on tumblr who likes to post selfies, and I'm always taken aback when I come across them because they look the exact same in every picture. (They take it in the same place, their hair is the same, their stance is the same, I think I've seen them in same shirt a couple times...why do you need so many copies of that?)

I have a strange relationship with "selfies", mostly because I know how to photograph myself. I study photography and generally hate being in front of the lens, but I have done some self portraits using the self timer on my non-cellphone camera. Likewise, I've seen some good self portraits done with (semi) professional equipment. I think what bothers me the post is fucking Instagram popularizing turning average to mediocre camera equipment onto yourself and filtering the results to hell and back. Since it's (unfortunately) easy enough to do on cellphones it's become all too popular while simultaneously looking like shit. I've lost track of the number of selfies I've seen where the white balance does weird things to people's faces or the rather overexposed backgrounds I encounter on outdoor selfies. Thus, I'll occasionally mock selfies by turning my DSLR on myself, making sure to obscure most of my face with the camera itself. :-P
