RD is the fan favorite? I would have guessed that'd be Fluttershy tbh

also, kinda having the sads that apparently a lot of people here dislike her...she's my fav. though lately I've been annoyed at how she's been written...

I love Rainbow Dash, personally, but I agree on how poorly she's been written. There was that back to back set of episodes in the second season (the Mysterious Mare-Do-Well and May the Best Pet Win) where I began to think that the writers hated her, too.

I think they decided early in the second season that Applejack, Twilight, and Fluttershy were the good ponies while Rainbow Dash, Rarity, and Pinkie were the bad ones, and stuck with that until partway through the third season. Hurricane Fluttershy felt like the first time Dash had been written well in years. If they came on board in the second season, I wouldn't blame people for not liking Rainbow Dash, because the writers didn't seem to either.

I also think this led to Applejack coming off as a more flat character. She wasn't really being allowed to be wrong to any significant degree, so she wasn't really allowed to grow much. I still don't think I've forgiven her for the cider episode. (And, yeah, I actually blame the writers and not the pastel pony)

I didn't like Mare Do Well either, though I didn't mind Best Pet. I just find that her flaws have been exaggerated to the point of being really awful, like she's just gotten more brash, more bossy, more obnoxious, and also more 2D. It makes me sad. :(

I started out loving Rd as well. But, like most of the fandom who went this way, RD being teh jerk she was in season 2 just made all B[ and at that time, Rarity was beginning to REALLY shine and I've loved her ever since. I'm still lukewarm to RD, though she was her season 1 self this season, which made me happy.
