...The fandom dislikes Rarity? Since when?

It's mostly dumb hardcore Bronies (you know, those Bronies) who think Rarity is a "bitch" and should be more like their obedient little waifu Fluttershy. I think most people aside from them either like Rarity or are neutral towards her. My little sister and the little girls I've babysat all love Rarity and think she's one of the best characters (she's my favorite too)

I didn't think any of the Mane 6 were unloved. They all have hardcore fans. To MLP's credit, each character was pretty well received and is a "favorite" to some fans.

Myself, I hate Pinkie Pie and love the rest. Rarity is possibly my number one.

It comes down to two things:

Some guys really, really cannot stand women who're feminine in a non-submissive way. They're fine with submissive feminine women, and surprisingly, they seem to be totally okay with masculine women, but women who're feminine in a socially active, status-conscious way really raise their hackles. (The only one I've seen try to explain it said that he "dated girls like that and barely escaped with my soul intact," and didn't elaborate.)

Some guys identify really, really strongly with the most pathetic male character in the cast, then rewrite him so he's not pathetic. (I can only assume this is the target audience for harem anime.) The character they align themselves with in MLP is Spike, and since Rarity does not want the hemi-peen, they want to "put her in her place." It's as awful as it sounds.

I wouldn't say MLP fandom dislikes Rarity, but rather that she's not many people's favourite...as an Applejack and Rarity fan who hates Twilight and dislikes Rainbow Dash, I feel you.

Let's be real for a minute. Anyone who hates on the Peebs doesn't have to be judged for being wrong all of the time. That's just the way they're wired (wrongly).

Hats off to OP! Rarity is my favorite as well. I adore characters with a flair for the stylish and dramatic.

I went into MLP expecting Rainbow Dash to be my favourite but I ended up loving Pinke Pie more. Rarity is great though, I'm sad to hear she apparently gets hate.

And PB is awesome.

So, I'm going to go off on my own little rant here, because I freaking am over the moon for Rarity and identify/relate with her the most, compared to the others in the Mane 6.

If someone tells me again* that I can't possibly be anything like or relate to Rarity, because they see me more as a Pinkie Pie, I think I'll scream.

*Even my closest Pony-Watching friend has told me this. AND I FEEL SO MISUNDERSTOOD. My life is a lie. DOES NOPONY UNDERSTAND ME?!?!

Nooooo Rarity is my favourite!

Rarity was the first character I ever encountered who was a trendy social climber and was actually a good role model. I've seen the type before, but they were either shallow antagonists or shallow protagonists, and they were kind of awful people either way. It was something of a revelation to me that a character like Rarity could actually be likable, and I'm consequently quite fond of her.

While I'm at it, I've seen someone observe that almost everything about Twilight marks her as a future Rival Turned Evil rather than a world-saving hero. (This was written before Sunset Shimmer showed up and basically was the Rival Turned Evil version of Twilight.) Rainbow Dash can be kind of refreshing, too, being a "boyish" character who's still one of the girls, and Pinkie is occasionally awesome when she's not being Flanderized into a complete idiot. They only dropped the ball on Applejack (who's too level-headed to get much more development) and Fluttershy (who doesn't seem to have a complete personality so much as a bundle of reactions.)

I don't watch MLP, but I agree completely on Adventure Time. PB is a much more interesting character, she says with a Marceline icon.

I'm almost the same, but with a different pony that Rainbow Dash. I originally thought I would like Fluttershy the most because I found her cute and her love of animals really endeared me to her, but the more I watched the show the more I fell in love with Rarity and it turned out she was the one I related to the most.

I like Rarity better than Rainbow Dash. Tbh I feel like Rainbow Dash is the one character they kind of dropped the ball on in terms of positive qualities, because I tend to find her kind of unpleasant.

I get the feeling that the reason PB gets so much hate is because she's not as black and white as people want her to be. So really you're just liking a complex character.

i would dislike her too she is a fucker look at he starndng there looking like shes something she's not nothing she's just a unicorn or some shit but no one cares about fucking unicorns man they ain't even real you get me shit ponies can't talk AND YEAH I MEAN THAT TWO WAYS in the sense of shit as an interjection but also as an adjective because ponies that are shit can't talk well no ponies can talk anyway but shit ponies are least likely to talk because they're made of shit not rainbows like you all thin they are what is that even about no it's not just rarity it should be hated it's all of them and the fact of peope getting behind this just goes to show that it is hard for people to tell what is true anymore and if someone can tell what is true they don't even care

Not to say that there aren't legitimate reasons for liking all the characters, but a lot of fandom members are sheep. They jump on trends and get all vocal about the most popular characters so they can be in with the crowd, conflating the fans for certain characters.

It's one of the most annoying things about all the fandoms I'm in.

I also expected to like Rainbow Dash a lot more than I do, since Firefly was one of my favourite G1 ponies (I still have my Firefly toy somewhere at my parents' house). But really, the best thing about her is the character design. Personality-wise, she's rather unlikeable a lot of the time.

I didn't expect to like Rarity but she is definitely one of my favourites, possibly number 2 after Fluttershy. And the Rarity-centric episodes are some of the best the show has to offer.

I think Rarity is more popular amongst people who aren't in the fandom. Pretty much every adult I know has embraced Rarity- the flamboyantly gay PhD, the mum at school who loved MLP when she was a kid, the ultra competitive guy, the laid back guys... all of them would class Rarity as their favourite. Because she is awesome.

For myself, I love her for being my daughter. My daughter is very much the artsy, determined feminine dominant personality and I am... pretty much the opposite. For her to have a role model that takes all her best traits, traits that can be devalued by a misogynistic society, and shows her how to use them... that's awesome. Rarity was her favourite from early on, although she may have been recently eclipsed by Twilight Sparkle. My girl has recently become a fluent reader, and that library full of books is too tempting to resist. ;) But if she's playing MLP (and she usually is) it is always about Rarity or Twilight.

...wait. fandom doesn't like PB? >.> everyone I know in the fandom loves Princess Bubblegum. maybe I just found a happy little corner where we can appreciate Marceline and Peebles equally. in this case, ignorance is indeed bliss~
