Sadly, it isn't just related to the animation industry.

Nah, I've worked in the entertainment industry. Shit hours and mediocre pay is pretty much standard. And you're lucky to even get expenses.

Considering they make like $900 a month, I'm surprised there's anyone in the animation industry.

The working hours isn't an industry thing, though. It's an overall Japanese cultural thing - spending ridiculously long hours at work is viewed as a positive thing, because it shows that you're industrious.

There's a reason the Japanese language has a specific term that means "death from overwork."

Considering there's literally a kickstarter for apartment housing for Japanese animators, I'm inclined the overwork culture is far more pronounced in the animation field.

I've worked in a Japanese company that wasn't in the animation industry and trust me, it's pretty standard.

I have a hard time believing that low wages are a sole cause of suicide. Maybe combined with culture? idk.

I've never heard of this issue; is this a big thing in anime? Is it considered unethical by some to spend money on anime?

Low wages leads to other problems like debt, and combined with overwork which means no social life, not enough rest...I feel like all of these things could lead to suicide.

I get that, but in a job like animation? Don't people compete to get into jobs like that? It's not like it's their only option. I find it hard to believe that people would continue to work in a job that pays them so little if they're smart/talented enough to have options.

...then again, maybe because it's so competitive, people will work for so little because they will be easily replaced? hm. I dunno a lot about this industry.

So yeah. Maybe you're right. If so, that's awful. Is that a Japan thing in general or just the industry (if you know)?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's a Japan thing. I worked in the Japanese automobile industry for a while and while I can't speak to whether there's any truth to the low wages part, I can say that the insane work hours is an overall cultural thing.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
When many people work in the same industry, the wages are bound to be low because there's just that many people capable to do the same job and being smart/talented doesn't make a big difference unless they're famous, because there are other smart/talented people in the same situation.

AFAIK the voice acting industry en Japan has the same issue with the wages, but not with the working hours.
Still, most voice actors earn most of their income in the events, releasing CDs and so on, instead of their main work.

I think the same can be said for pretty much any job imaginable. There's always gonna be employers that treat people like shit; doesn't matter if it's animators or janitors. Of course it's probably more common in certain industries, but I don't think you should feel bad about buying anime.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well honestly you'd be hard pressed to be able to find any entertainment to support if we're talking about insane hours, low pay and the health dangers it causes.

The animation industry is horrible about this in the west too, things are super competitive and people pretty much will step over each other to get a job in it no matter how terrible it is.

I know this is a longshot considering all of these shows aired at least five years ago, but does anybody know what the series to the right of Inazuma 11 and Dennou Coil (the one with the purple-haired kid) is? I like the art.

Never mind, found it, it was Tailenders.
