Godzilla

So have you guys seen it already? I just came back from it and kinda want to put my thought out there because... I'll put them on the second comment for spoilers

quick without spoilers did you like it or not

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I am on the fence on whether to watch it in the theater or wait until it comes out on DVD.

I'm so on the fence about what to tell you. The monster part is great, it has great camera direction and visuals, so on that front I think it's worth to see it in theaters. The human characters are boring and they sadly take too much time in the movie, though.

Godzilla has under 15 minutes screen time in the entire movie, and doesn't appear until 90mins in. That tells you all you need to know about it. It is worse than Bay-formers, worse even than Revenge of the Fallen.

Seen it, wait for the you tube clips. It doesn't even justify a DVD, much less a theater ticket. Godzilla is barely in it, you have to wait almost 90 minutes until you even get a glimpse of him. The rest is pretty much Cloverfield only with smoother camera work, but less convincing actors.

I feel like I watched two movies at the same time. One was an interesting update on the mythos with AMAZING visuals and art direction, with elements that could have been mined for a lot of human drama

[HEAVY SPOILERS AHEAD YOU'VE BEEN WARNED]

and the other was a movie about the most bland, uninteresting Americans ever. I don't know what they were thinking, killing Cranton's character-- we could have followed the character archetype of "the crazy scientist" and actually see him come to face with the reason he's suffered so much, but instead we get to follow his boring son who doesn't know anything and whose main motivation is "uuh". Why couldn't Ken Watanbe have more screentime? He had a connection to the nuclear weapon aspect and an unique understanding of Godzilla.

Awww man, they kill off the mad scientist character who's played by Bryan Cranston, in favour of another bland-as-whitebread videogame protagonist? And Ken Watanabe doesn't get a lot of screentime?

Yeah, I think I'll rent it on DVD.

Watanabe's character was such wasted potential! Literally he's the only person not thinking "nukes solve everything"

I haven't but I want to see it so badly, aaahhh. I've heard the characters were boring as hell but that's the way most Godzilla movies go so I can't even be bothered. As long as the main event himself is awesome and there's plenty of buildings going asplodey, I'll be happy. ;3;

I'm definitely going to try to see it next weekend though.

Re: Godzilla

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, yeah, I wasn't expecting highly multifaceted characters or anything, but they could have put a little effort in them!

Things go asplodey in a very pretty way tho.

That's very good to hear! There's another monster besides Godzilla, isn't there? How did you like that critter?

I fear you will not be happy.

Is he not awesome? I know he's not in the movie very much but I was led to believe the parts he was in were fantastic.

Re: Godzilla

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
He is not, except by comparison to the Emmerich version (of course compared to that version fucking Godzooky was the balls). They are too brief to be anything much, and there isn't much camera linger on him. Apparently they spent all the CGI money on animating Bryan Cranston, no money left for Godzilla shots.

I thought about going to see it tomorrow, but I think I'll probably go see Cap 2 again. I can't get enough of it. No regrets. Once Cap 2 is really gone I'll probably see Godzilla though.

Re: Godzilla /// SO MUCH NEGATIVITY HERE. >:( I enjoyed it immensely.

I am a Godzilla fan from the cradle and I say this movie did a good job with the kaiju. I won't spoil anything, however I liked what they did and how it ended. My favorite moment was when Ford and Godzilla lock eyes before smoke envelopes Godzilla's face.

Alsoooo, Godzilla has his bad breath in this movie. I was worried that would get left out and it wasn't.

The fights were epic.

GARRY CHALK. (Look him up if you're not a Transformers fan.)

There is quite a bit of destruction due to monsters fighting.

I personally think Godzilla's screentime in this was perfect for a first outing. I enjoyed the anticipation of his arrival and appearance and let out a big cheer when he finally did show up.

And finally, hello, people, if you hated the movie or weren't happy with Godzilla not showing up enough, go write fanfiction and have him show up all you want. I think it was worth the movie ticket and I hope this film takes it to the bank.

Because the iguana we had to watch in 98 wasn't Godzilla, but THIS MOVIE DID IT RIGHT.

Re: Godzilla /// SO MUCH NEGATIVITY HERE. >:( I enjoyed it immensely.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'll say this for the 98 Iguana-Zilla movie. At least we got to see the monster early and often (although still not often enough that they had to pad it out with Jurassic Park tribute band). I don't enjoy having to "anticipate" a title character for three-quarters of the movie's runtime. Maybe if they'd had us "anticipate" until the first half hour mark, or hell, maybe even 45 minutes at a push. An hour thirty, nah, that is too much.

Basically it suffers from the old Superhero Origin Movie Syndrome, an entire movie of bullshit and ten minutes of the title character we paid to see at the end with implication that you better come and watch the drek if you want to actually see the character properly in a sequel. I don't enjoy movie execs extorting me that way.

I'm really glad I read this comment! I was beginning to feel kind of down about it but everything you've said makes me feel a lot better. :3

People that whoop and cheer in the movie theater should be shot. You are worse than Hitler.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
so...if the entire theater whoops and cheers, does that mean they're temporarily the Nazi army?

DA

You'd have hated the older Star Trek TOS movies with Shatner and Nimoy. People cheered and clapped all over the place in those films.

I am still debating seeing it, though your comment makes me think it's not a bad idea. I don't know if I will have the money to be able to see it in the cinema, since I had a pile of things to do yesterday, and then went and bought a shirt on clearance as well.

People go into movies with too many expectations and act all personally offended when the movie doesn't do what they wanted/expected. Then they say it was shit based on that.

Walking in with little or no expectations means you get surprised and enjoy the show without picking everything apart at every turn.

People say The Godfather is the best movie ever made, and it bored me to death.

It is possible to not like a movie without calling it complete shit the way people here are doing.

See the film and form your own opinion rather than letting everyone else saying it's crap deter you. It's GODZILLA and as a fan from the cradle I just couldn't skip it even if I wanted to. :)

Just saw it last night. The... Godzilla bits of the movie were fantastic. The humans... eh. Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen and Juliette Binoche were so, so wasted (what were these people doing in a movie like this, you have to wonder). ATJ's character accomplished literally zero of the things he set out to do. The monster did all the work. Most useless protagonist ever.
