I really think you're overestimating how many people are the types to make those "yay representation" posts. Once again, a loud minority does not suddenly become a majority. So I have a hard time agreeing with "she could have sang anything and won anyway".

She won because europolitics usually involved in Eurovision (Scandinavian countries voting for other Scandinavian countries, etc) were overrun by a urge to do the politically correct thing.
And to piss off Putin's Russia, maybe.

I thought she won because it was a cheesy Bond-esque power ballad without any gimmicks (other than the beard). That's what usually wins Eurovision.

I find the power ballads a bit boring but you have to admit they're the ones that win.

Yep. Let's be honest, Eurovsion is a campfest and she's pretty much right up everyone's alley.

What I found truly fascinating is that Russia ended up giving Austria 5 points...largely due to televoting, too, where Conchita got the third most votes; the Russian judges were less enthusiastic and ranked her eleventh. And Belarus, the other country that made a stink about her inclusion in Eurovision, had a comparable televoter response, giving Conchita the fourth most votes; the Belarusian judges were a lot harsher, though, so Belarus didn't end up giving Austria any points.

So either there are a lot more Russian and Belarusian LGBT-supporters than one might have imagined, or the Russian and Belarusian voters were just so blown away by Conchita's performance that they couldn't help but vote for her regardless of any prejudices they might hold, or both.

(Scandinavian countries voting for other Scandinavian countries, etc)

Except last year when both Norway and Sweden didn't give Finland any points. We're all still really bitter about it. Scandinavian solidarity my ass!*

*Finland's not actually a part of Scandinavia, but we're bordered by Sweden to the west and Norway to the north. That should count for something!

I always thought Finland hated Sweden anyway.

Wasn't there that thing with minting a coin to commemorate getting invaded by Russia and napped from Sweden?
