I really think you're overestimating how many people are the types to make those "yay representation" posts. Once again, a loud minority does not suddenly become a majority. So I have a hard time agreeing with "she could have sang anything and won anyway".

Setting aside:

- whatever OTT crap is doing the rounds on the sh*t hole that is Tumblr;
- and whether or not it deserved to win (I loved the song, but I know not everyone did)

:Conchita Wurst winning was essentially every other European country giving Russia the finger.

Normally I hate political voting in Eurovision. Currently, there is terrifying homophobic vitriol coming out of Russia though, and gay people are facing an escalating level of persecution.

So, this one time? I am a-okay with Europe making a stand, and saying 'F*CK YOU, RUSSIA'.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course she could have sung whatever she wanted and won. The ESC is never about music. NEVER. Or at least it hasn't been for a long time.

[personal profile] seventh_seal 2014-05-17 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Come on, Eurovision is ridiculous anyway, it's all about the spectacle not the quality of the music.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, her song was pretty good actually. I mean the original favorites (sweden azebeijan) where while well constructed songs pretty flat live. Conchita really brought it. Eurovision viewers are suckers for a good ballad.

Nope. Rise Like a Phoenix was by far the best song in the contest and Conchita sang it really well. It could easily be the theme song for the next James Bond movie, and the performance itself was very stylish.

This was truely a deserving victory; which is NOT something that happens often!

Well this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDL36IQtLrw was the song she tried to represent austria with before. I don't think she would have won it with this.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Can you still call it a marketing ploy when the guy has tried to represent Austria at the ESC several times, has been rejected all those times before, and now finally got to do it anyway - with the same stage persona, but a different song?

I don't think anyone set Conchita up as a LGBT campaigner, except the Russians (and the British Fascist Party guy), once they did that and said you were either condemning Conchita or being an LGBT "pervert", pretty much everyone looked at who was condemning Conchita and decided "pervert" was probably the better option.

Frankly, I don't care if he/she/they is trans, cis, binary, nonbinary, or whatever else.

All that matters to me in this whole thing, is everyone who talks shit about how "unnatural" this person is, and how they must decide whether they want to be a (stereotypical) woman or a (stereotypical) man. All those people, who lament about Conchita being a perversion and a threat to their children. All those people who, don't believe that even a single person voted on her because they liked her singing, rather than because they were brainwashed by fat, ugly feminazis.

And another thing that matters a whole lot to me, is everyone who voted on her and who supports her, regardless of how this person identifies, because they understand that every human being deserves respect and has the right to dress and present however they wish, no matter the reason.

I think it's important.

+1

It just makes me sad how most of Tumblr is too young to remember Dana International. Diva was my fucking JAM.

You are either too young or American, because Eurovision already had a trans woman, Dana International. She is from Israel and would get death threats from ultra Orthodox Jews.

To be fair, I loved her song. It would make an excellent soundtrack for a Bond movie.

Unfortunately, secret maker sounds really clueless.
I don't want to be that person but the Eurovision isn't something you can judge on the same level of American (or even international) mainstream pop culture. Conchita Wurst isn't Gaga and while the visual factor and the 'controversies' played a huge role in her victory, that... is what actually Eurovision is for.

It isn't a talent show nor our version of Coachella, it's mostly a deliberately camp yearly tradition that's extremely political in nature, to the point that you could usually group 'alliances' just by checking the relation between any given countries. And it's satirical and bold in an "in your face" way.

I'm glad that people overseas loved Conchita and thought of her as a gender roles smashing symbol but I'm sure that many activists are projecting a lot. Sadly, the LGBT scene in many European countries is anything but promising and people are trying their hardest to erase centuries of propaganda and bigotry so let's not make things worse by calling her transgender because the stereotype that 'trans = extremely camp gay person who doesn't care about passing' is strongly alive where I live and... it really won't be of any help if people keep implying that drag performers = trans people.

She seemed so happy about winning and I'm happy for her. But man, I did not like her song. And normally I'm okay with power ballads but something about the melody in Rise Like a Phoenix just made me go bleh. So now I'm conflicted. But hell, my tastes in Eurovision songs never coincides with whatever wins.

yeah yeah, tumblr folks are trying to stylize her as genderqueer symbol or whatever. That's somehow SO harmful and JUST motivated by "political correctness". Which is somehow the code word for "but I'm indifferent about this, so the other people must be faking it"

sorry, but look up any of the eurovision songs on youtube, especially her own song and look at the festering hate comments there to get some perspective. Political correct is in most countries still manly men and womenly women in a hetero marriage with 1,2 children in a nuclear family.
