Actor recs

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-05-17 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
So you know when you suddenly fall for an actor and want to see more of their stuff, but aren't sure what's worth bothering with and what's not?

Let's fix that. Name an actor, and the rest of us can suggest movies, shows, etc. with them in it that are worth watching.

Or link to those YouTube compilations of their scenes/work/etc. :P

Sebastian Stan

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-05-17 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably not a secret for whoever was here yesterday, but I'm on a bit of a Sebastian Stan kick and want to see more stuff with him in it. What's worth watching, what's not, and/or any good video compilations from a show or movie with just his scenes in them? :D

I LOVED Kings as it aired and didn't even know it was him because I watched Kings while it aired years ago. I know not everyone enjoyed it, but it's only 10 episodes or so, it's not a long series.

I've loved him in almost everything I've seen him in. Uh, Kings, Political Animals, Once Upon a Time.

But I wouldn't recommend The Covenant or The Architect. The Covenant... For some people it's a cheesy movie that's so bad they look back on it with fondness. I just hated it. Barely made it ten minutes before I considered quitting, and by mid film I was wishing it was over. I finished, but it was seriously not my thing and held nothing for me. Looking back, it wasn't worth the time, even for Sebastian Stan.

Pretty much the same for The Architect, which sucks because the cast was pretty good. And the actors tried (And since we're talking about Sebastian, he was seriously, seriously gorgeous in this film, and good in general), but... It just kind of went nowhere. It hardly moved, there was no satisfying resolution to anything, it was majorly depressing... I didn't care for it.

I actually didn't love him in Once the first time around. I could see his potential as an actor I could like, but I didn't love the character and was surprised at how much love he got. Now I get it, and rewatching season 1 I can love him even if I still don't love the character much.

Aw, I love The Covenant, although I definitely get why it's not for everyone :)

Political Animals is good, Kings not so much, IMO. Kings seems to be one of those shows you either love or hate; personally, I found the main character so incredibly dull and his actor so terribly wooden that nothing could make me watch past the second episode. Not even Sebastian Stan as the tortured gay son of a political leader, especially as you can just watch this vid instead:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUMvVUWotnE

(Though I consider the pilot worth watching just for the scene you see in this vid at 0:10, which is basically eye fucking at its best and one of the most erotic scenes I have seen in any show. The porn industry should take notes.)

Chris Evans

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-05-17 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I've watched everything with Chris Hemsworth in it, even the bad stuff. I'm not quite willing to do that with Evans since even he didn't make Fantasic Four watchable. That being said, I'd love some recs of stuff he's in that are at least watchable.

I've been meaning to do this with Evans, too! Did you see The Losers? I adored that movie on a whole, but he was so cute and likable in it. And pretty, so very pretty. I also liked Push; though it wasn't fantastic it was quite fun and was set in a cool universe. He and Dakota Fanning had a sweet friendship in that one. It was surprisingly entertaining. Oh, and he was wonderful in Scott Pilgrim, though he had very little screen time. I'm not the world's biggest fan of that film, but it's different and visually entertaining, and there are worse ways to spend a couple hours. (Or however long it is.)

(I know I've seen him in a couple other things but I can't remember if I enjoyed them...)

He was cute in the Nanny Diaries (which also features Scarlett Johansson)...he's sort of a UES college boy.

London wasn't bad...I think it explored some of his potential.

If you want earlier semi-awkward stuff, The Perfect Score (also with Johansson) and Not Another Teen Movie. I haven't seen much else.

Not Another Teen Movie!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's a stupid parody movie, but he's really funny in it.

I also liked Cellular, it was pretty good at maintaining the suspense. The Losers is good. Push is passable, but I felt like it needed more exposition. The Perfect Score was kind meh, but I liked him in it.

And hey, he was the most watchable part of Fantastic Four.

I'm a big fan of Idris Elba. I've watched Pacific Rim, Luther, and both Thor movies. Any other good movies he was in? Was the new Mandela movie alright?

Also, Lucy Liu. I've only seen her in Elementary. Are any of her other movies (besides Kill Bill and Charlie's Angels) worth watching?

WATCH LUTHER. That show is amazing, especially good if you're on an Elba binge.

Maybe this is too obvious here but... if you like Idris Elba, you should watch The Wire.

You should really, really, really watch The Wire.

I've mostly seen Elba in action movies, but I've always loved him in them. Even in the so so ones. I rec'd The Losers upthread for Chris Evans and will do the same for Elba because it was a fun movie. Takers wasn't great, but imo was worth the watch. He and Paul Walker were so pretty...

I watched RocknRolla for Tom Hardy not realizing Elba was in it, so I'm sure that was a nice surprise... I barely remember anything about that movie now, but I think I liked it okay at the time. I must've preferred the former movies, lol.

Lucy was in Southland, but not for long. Still, that show was magnificent and you should watch it.

Jeremy Renner

(Anonymous) 2014-05-17 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's continue the theme of MCU actors: Jeremy Renner.

I've seen The Unusuals (LOVED it), Hurt Locker (great movie) and Bourne Legacy (thought it was terrible). Next on my list would be Phantom Protocol. Any other recs? Is Phantom Protocol good/bad?

Re: Jeremy Renner

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
In my opinion, his character was the best part of American Hustle (which was certainly fun, but I would have been completely down with an entire movie focused on Carmine Polito).

Twelve and Holding is his best movie, IMHO.

Actually all the indy films he did before Hurt Locker are great, but that's pretty good too. And 28 Weeks Later wasn't bad.

I thought he was good in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
S.W.A.T. is an okay action film, though it's not really much like the TV show it was supposed to be based on from what I can tell, but it's got a lot of "Hey, it's that guy from that thing" actors in it.

Oops, I meant Ghost Protocol

I've seen Y Tu Mama Tambien, Motorcycle Diaries, Rudo y Cursi, Casa De Mi Padre (it looked to ridiculous not to) and I'd like to see more of his stuff but I'm not sure what to start with. I remember hearing somewhere that he was almost going to be in a Zorro reboot and I got so excited but then he wasn't, and then I got disappointed. Then I actually saw the trailer for said Zorro reboot and I'm glad he dodged that bullet (but seriously, I would kill to see him as Zorro).

The only thing I've seen him in is Chronicle. It was a cool concept even though it has issues. He was good in it though.
