Her name's Amal Alamuddin. Google her and judge for yourself. I think she's quite pretty.

Ah, everything makes sense now.

I don't care who he dates at all, but the weird secondhand sense of entitlement and pride in the secret makes me lol even more now.

Why does it matter?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I was getting to the heart of the matter here.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Idk but the secret makes it sound like Clooney loves her for her brains. Probably helps that she's really hot too

Yes, it is ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do you feel satisfaction? What does it prove? I'm pretty sure a couple of the models, waitresses, presenters, etc., were also brainy and could speak other languages.

Re: Yes, it is ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
+1. I wish people wouldn't assume that "waitress" or "model" = "dumbass." They're jobs, not cognitive styles.

It's not just being smart, but successful. There's a lot of bullshit out there about how women can't ever have high-powered or prestigious careers because men will be intimidated and resentful and emasculated because of it. So, I suppose it's nice to see a famous example show otherwise. Yes, anecdotes =/= data, but still, I can see why people would appreciate something like this.

I know, right? It's almost as if someone had an irrational opinion and decided to share it as a secret on a community that's ordinarily teeming with only sensible, logical opinions that everyone agrees with. I bet the OP feels like such a fool.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I always get a little sad when those long-term single celebrities settle down in the end, because I'm someone who has no interest in long-term relationships and I always liked seeing famous people who are like me in that regard (while the rest of the world seems to think you NEED to get married to be happy). I know these people don't owe me shit and I hope they're happy with their lives, but it's still a bit sad.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a similar reaction. It's nice when celebrities say they don't want to/ won't get married and it's a bit sad when they end up changing their minds because I hear often enough that everyone wants to get married deep down and it's a just a matter of time until I change my mind. That the only way for a relationship to go on or to be serious is marriage.

There's nothing wrong with staying single, or having a very long-term boyfriend or girlfriend (no matter your age), or never "settling down" into a monogamous relationship. Seriously.

But like you, I wish him and other people who change their minds all the happiness in their married lives.

Just remember that when people like that end up changing their minds, it doesn't validate the people who judged them for not wanting to settle down beforehand.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, it was always going to happen once his looks really started to fade and the only much younger woman he was going to get was a pure golddigger anymore. These are the last of his even decent-looking years and he could see the writing on the wall, so he locked something down before he started to have to pay women to date him.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he is getting pretty grandpa-like in his appearance. Pretty much the epitome of a celebrity who "everyone"/the media declares to be hot, but really isn't.

(Another example of this type of old celebrity would be Jennifer Aniston. I think I saw an amusing comparison of tabloid reactions to the respective engagements somewhere)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

And if anyone wants to refute, look at Jack Nicholson these days.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Locked something down? Seriously?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-19 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Riiight. It couldn't ever be something so simple as perhaps he's simply in love with her and finally sees in her somebody he could spend the rest of his life with? It has that his looks starting to go so he was desperate to marry somebody or some sexist bullshit like that?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-19 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I just assumed he was gay. Like awesome gay. Digging myself into a hole here, but am I genuinely the only one who thought that?

He's had a lot of girlfriends in the past he wasn't too serious about. I don't know too much about it, but he wouldn't be the first predominantly gay guy to marry a woman (Elton was married to a woman for a while).

Clooney is one star whose bankability very much rests on his perceived looks, however wrong or in the past that is. Quite a few big Hollywood names are secretly gay, that's an open secret. I kind of admired him before for not marrying, actually.

I feel now I've got entirely the wrong end of the stick. Everyone else is obsessed by how hot and/or young his wife is.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-19 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
You're not alone, I also didn't think he was interested in women sexually (whether gay, ace, or whatever) but enjoyed going out with women and having a good time.

Whatever their reasons for getting married, I think he's awesome and she's awesome and I hope they're happy together.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-19 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah it's a common theory about him. Not that getting married proves anything either way.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-19 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured he wasn't gay, if only because it's a mostly common known fact that the reasonf or his 'never getting married' vow is because he got out of a bad marriage in the past before he got really famous (I think it was right before ER took off infact), but I know the 'it's because he's gay' is a common fan theory.

All the discussions around his engagement are so weird

(Anonymous) 2014-05-19 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)

1. He's been married before (to the actress who plays Roger's first wife on Mad Men, and has also been married to "Roger" for ages IRL), so it's not like this is something new and groundbreaking for him
2. I know he used to be a sex symbol (still is) but...what does it matter who he marries? Is is some sort of validation for career women over models? And do career women need George Clooney's validation?
3. She is beautiful, successful and much younger. He is the one who is lucky, yet people seem to think it's the opposite?
