Chances are, you're not alone. And I so agree. This is a trope that has put a big dent in my ability to ship some pairings because I am just so sick of seeing writers portray cheating on your wife with the dude you love as a "happy ending" and "being true to yourself" and Real Romantic Love as not giving a shit about anyone except your twoo wuv being you know, love is totally doled out by a quota before you're born. And turning the characters I like into selfish assholes while acting as if what they're doing is perfectly okay *cough* Holmes/Watson *cough*

That's the other part that also pissed me off; that apparently nothing in the universe matters other than the TWU WUV of the OTP. Sometimes it's handwaved with the wife being secretly evil or really in love with someone else, which makes it all nice and convenient for the pairing to get off scott-free.

It gets even worse considering the most common pairing I see it in, Jean/Marco from Attack on Titan. Marco was shown to be a very kind and empathetic person who was also a good judge of character. The idea that someone like that could be so utterly self-centered and selfish just pushes it all into OOC too.

+1. If the path to happiness in fic involves cheating, I'm no longer on the pairing's side and stop reading it. Like hell I'll root for decent people being hurt for no good reason.
