Rant about your fandoms, yo!

Something about your fandom pissing you off? Be a whiny asshole about it here.

There's a lot of slash in my fandom and that's fine. What is NOT fine is that one specific female character is constantly being used as the 'beard' for some self-repressed guy and is then treated as an obstacle for the slash OTP. That's bad enough, but I keep seeing her being treated with such contempt for her feelings and dignity it makes me wanna strangle these little whelps who write it.

Thing is, if they wrote a story about a tragic situation where a closested gay man is trapped between a woman he married and a man he loves, and all three were written sympathetically, I could deal with that. But noooo, apparently emotional/sexual cheating and abandonment/divorce is totally okay! Out the way, woman, gay sex must happen!

I really really want to call out the fandom about this but I don't know how without totally alienating myself.

I'll go I'll go!

- Bucky and Steve being lovers before TWS. I can buy it somehow when it's during the war and if it's written wonderfully well, but in any other case I just go, 'really?' To each their own of course, but I just can't read it happening like they are modern boys (I mean, it's not even easy now). Also, I like Peggy and their blooming relationship is totally believable and nice, so yeah.

- TWS!Cap blushing. Any other Avenger blushing, really. I think once I read about the Winter Soldier blushing.

- Hair cutting fic. There's a lot. I HATE IT BECAUSE I'M PETTY AND I LIKE BUCKY IN A PONYTAIL OKAY

- Fic where's there's like a switch that makes Bucky go Winter Soldier and then revert back to Bucky. And they are treated like two different persons. I mean, it's the same awesome character, why would you do that? There's no Bucky without TWS anymore!

Which fandom and pairing?

Because I haven't complained enough about the MLP fandom already

I've complained over and over about Spike, so I'll shift gears and complain about Twilight. Basically, I think a lot of the writers who speculate about what kind of a princess Twilight will be are fundamentally misunderstanding her character arc.

Twilight looks up to Celestia, admires Celestia, and to some degree wants to be Celestia. Because of this, Future Twilight is often written as Celestia 2.0, a regal figure who stands above her people and lets no one (save perhaps other alicorns) get close enough to her to see her flaws. But Twilight's entire character arc has been about recognizing that she CAN'T stand alone--she needs her friends as much as they need her. If she'd never had friends, she could have become a Celestia figure, but now that she has them, she's not gonna go "Well, I guess I'm above you now! By-bye, have a nice life!" Even if she outlives them, the legacy of an entire lifetime leading from among the crowd rather than above it, on an equal level with ponies who could have just been her subjects, is unlikely to lead into a Celestia-like role.

I think the show's actual writers understand this perfectly well--just look at how the last season ended. It's just the fans who miss the point.

I really don't like flower crowns. I think they're more annoying than anything, especially since their kind of over done. I'm not usually the type to go "I don't like a thing you like!!!" because I find that dumb and petty, so I mostly stay quiet about it. But inside, the displeasure silently builds.

Admittedly, this tends to happen to me in a lot of fandoms, but for some reason it really annoys me in this particular one. There are exactly two pairings with any traction in fandom, not counting Main Character/OC and Main Character/Crossover Character, and the lack of variety really bugs me. It's not even that I dislike those two pairings, necessarily, it's that there's about twenty stories of each of them for every one of any other pairing and I just desperately want some variety.

Fandoms with megaships tend to bug me regardless, but at least with bigger ones even small percentages of other pairings will still net you a good few stories. In smaller fandoms, like this one, I tend to end up giving up in disgust.

God I hate that. I had a friend who did it too - she said she loved a character too much to think he'd act a certain way in canon (admittedly it was a bit OOC and weird), so it was clearly his beard's fault for talking him into being with her... except... why the hell would she worship a character who strung someone along in the first place?

Chances are, you're not alone. And I so agree. This is a trope that has put a big dent in my ability to ship some pairings because I am just so sick of seeing writers portray cheating on your wife with the dude you love as a "happy ending" and "being true to yourself" and Real Romantic Love as not giving a shit about anyone except your twoo wuv being you know, love is totally doled out by a quota before you're born. And turning the characters I like into selfish assholes while acting as if what they're doing is perfectly okay *cough* Holmes/Watson *cough*

Not a rant about my fandom as such, but I never seem to get into anything 'current'. I have no idea what most people in fandom are on about these days except through osmosis.

I'd like to try being part of a fandom where the series is still airing. One day, I'll manage it.

This actually sort of extends to the Disney fandom at large. I've met a few people who give you the stinkeye if you don't like every single Disney film ever. I don't know if it's nostalgia goggles or what.

This goes for a variety of fandoms, but I auto-rage (internally) anytime somebody starts in on how they can't trust the creators of their source material to tell good stories.

Now I don't object to original characters catagorically. IT can be nice to have an outside PoV, or if canon shits on the characters to bring in someone who's nice to them. I'm even ok wit hthe occasional OC/Canon character romance.

BUT.

I'm marathoning Walking Dead right now and the level of OCs in this fandom is just APPALLING. It's even a good canon for OCs! Plenty of opportunities for the characters to meet other survivors here and there! But noooo, it's all "Rick's kid sister Three-part Silly Name joins the group, will she and Daryl bone?", sisters and 'lost loves' and shit everywhere, starring roles and full bios in the summary.

They let you tag for OC at FF.net, people! IF you're gonna do that shit at least tag it so I can filter it out!

Natasha bashing. Fics where there are dubcon issues because the author emphasizes Bucky's brainwashing and yet there is happy sex with Steve. Fics/art that deals with Bucky's arm in uncomfortable ways (magnets on it? Really?).

also that whole #cancelhannibal campaign was the most embarassing thing i've seen in a long time. YES, almost as embarassing as tinhat J2 shippers. you're all a big bunch of whiny babies throwing a fit because "someone likes what I don't like! waaaahhhh!" jfc i didn't like the margot-sleeping-with-will scene, but i don't think you comprehend how much worse it could have been. i didn't see anyone throwing campaigns over irene adler in sherlock!

and on the OTHER END OF THE SPECTRUM, what about all you idiots defending some of the writing decisions as though Bryan Fuller is an ineffable god who can do no wrong? jesus, it's as though the tiniest bit of criticism is a personal attack on you! GUESS WHAT, YOU CAN LIKE THINGS AND ALSO CRITIQUE THEM, YOU LITTLE SHITS.

ALSO, please cool it with the campaigns to get people to watch the show. people will watch it if they want to, they won't if they don't. stop shoving it in people's faces, it's RUDE.

I hate juggernaut pairings. I get the feeling that most of the attention to them is caused by featherbrained young fangirls who can't imagine anything else than their twue wuv OTP and don't even see anything else. This is totally unfair to most of the great fanfic/fanart (and I also ship the big pairings myself, and would even more if thisdidn't annoy me so much) but I can't help feeling resentment. It's not even that true in my current fandom, compared to my previous ones, so I have little cause to complain.

On a related note, I'm annoyed when people are shocked that just because I ship A/B, I can also ship A/C and B/C and A/B/C and A/D. It is entirely possible to multiship. It's not weird. Although in my turn, I think people who only ship A/B are weird, and probably mentally stunted, so I'm being entitled and stupid myself.

From my own observations of the fandom on tumblr and elsewhere, I am quite tired of the notion that Bucky needs to be coddled and fucked back to health. When he's not being used sexually, he's like some child with no bodily autonomy. It's gross.

Also, Natasha is incredible and everyone needs to deal with that.

I mostly lurk in this fandom and don't really participate, but....

Bones. I don't think I need to say a whole lot else. There is so much about it that drives me nuts I'm not entirely sure where to begin. I've found a few bright spots and cling to them, though. It helps a little.

I know it's not supposed to matter whether your pairings become canon or not but out of the probably close to 100 pairings I've shipped over my 15 or so years in fandom, only two have been canon (and one that possibly was going to be) and it makes me sad for some reason.

One of them had this ridiculously angsty on again/off again relationship that could be frustrating but I still loved, until the new showrunner announced that they were done for good and I quit watching the show.

The other one is from a really obscure show that only lasted one season and it looked like they were maybe going to break up at the end.

The third, they had feelings for each other but there was a lot of drama, and the show ended on a cliffhanger of whether they'd actually gotten together or not.

Of my two current favorites, one is slash and because of that will never get together.

The other is a canon gay character with someone of the opposite sex. Which will also never be canon, and I feel horrible for even wanting it to be.

I don't know why I can't just like the popular endgame pairings that live happily ever after.

People who have to be giant wanky drama queens about things they don't like instead of just blocking it or using Tumblr Savior like the rest of us.
Basically, in my current fandom a novel was recently released containing a popular character's backstory which includes his hot asshole dad. Fandom being fandom, art appears on Pixiv of Hot Asshole Dad and Underage Main Characters. Someone posts these pictures in the tag on Tumblr. Several people go full-on drama queen in the main series tag talking about how "this is why I want to leave fandom sometimes" and "I swear this fandom is a fucking shithole and you are all pedophiles" and "you are doing fandom wrong" etc etc. They receive lots of anon hate because people don't like being told how to interact with their fandom. Person continues being a drama queen, their other drama queen friends join in, including one person stating that shipping ruins fandoms and people shouldn't post porn in the tags because won't somebody think of the children. The rest of fandom quietly (and occasionally publicly) wishes they would just shut up and leave fandom already because if anyone's 'ruining' the fandom it's the whiny drama queens who won't Fucking Shut Up about what they don't like. The tag became much more calming for me when I finally said screw it and blocked the lot of them. Thank you, ignore feature and Tumblr Savior, if only more people in this fandom knew how to use you.

I'm kind of tired of the Orphan Black and Shingeki fandoms portraying the main f/f pairings as so perfect and romantic all the time. Wish there was a bit more exploration of the darker and unhealthy sides of the pairings too.

I am so tired of this fandom:

- Joking about a severely mentally ill character
- Romanticizing abusive women bc they're hot and ~empowered
- Erasing bisexuality

It's started bleeding into the show (though the first one the show always endorsed) and it's really dragging it down.
