It's weird, because Anna and Elsa look reasonably well in the flat, paper cut style of the little Goldenbooks. Though I've noticed that they don't have art like that in your secret. (Rapunzel is just...unnerving)

I am too overcome by my bitterness over the re-designs to comment in a rational manner. So I'll just say: hfdkalfjdkalfjdka! CHANGE THEM BAAAACK!

I don't know what that style is, but it sure doesn't flatter Pocahontas. She looks like she was carved out of a tree trunk and the knife went dull partway through.

The look of Disney princesses have always changed, Snow White looks nothing like the final ones before CGI took over. Having said that, I personally would like to go back to hand-drawn just because I like that look and find that CG drops into the uncanny valley a little too often for me (the Incredibles was the worst for CG characters, it practically looked Stop-Motion at times)

Really?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I dislike the Uncanny Valley CG characters a lot, a lot, but I was fine with The Incredibles because their designs didn't ping weirdly realistic with me.

That picture, which I assume is an official Disney image, bothers me so much. Why the heck aren't the princesses all the same size? Why is Jasmine a mini person?

I heard once that Disney, while having lots of images of the princesses in the same picture, refuses to have images that display the princesses interacting with one another - for the sanctity of the different worlds they come from, or something. That also bothers me. I want to see them as friends.

I read that as well; I think it's kind of uncanny to be standing beside people you aren't in the same universe of in an attempt to entice small children.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Jasmine has to be smaller because if she was a fullsized brown-person, she might accidentally scare the average Disney exec.

Okay, you want the Season Two onwards boxset of Once Upon a Time then.

Iirc it might be something to do with Jasmine's age? She's like 15 right?

Aha! Found the ages!

That's weird, because I remember that there was something called Princess Academy where they intended to have them all interacting?

So, so, so much this.

Agree 100% The CGI uncanny valley nightmare Disney is doing makes me sad.

I liked both Frozen and Tangled but I've got to admit I didn't care for Rapunzel's look. Sometimes it was fine, sometimes it was not. I couldn't get over how huge her eyes were (especially when she cut her hair.)

I feel like Frozen is a bit better (And think Elsa is beautiful) but I can definitely see why people wouldn't like some of the art. I hope Disney changes things up in their next couple films.

Weirdly the HUGE EYES bothered me more in Frozen. (I presume I was more focused on Rapunzel's hair.)

I'm ok with CG movies, but they do make me a little sad because when it comes to Disney in particular I usually end up liking the hand drawn concept art better than how the the CG versions in the movie turned out.

Makes sense. Rapunzel really stands out (in a weird way) in comparison with the rest of them.

Rapunzel doesn't bother me, outside her dress colors being switched. MERIDA is what bothers me the most. They made her face a bit more angular and it just...looks so WEIRD.

But even the non-CGI girls in the princess line have different styles.

ia. Why would you want them to look all uniform, anyway? They're unique and come from unique continuities and unique stories.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I get that the designs are different, but I have this thing about...I guess you would call it the medium?

For example, when I see fanart of video game or cartoon characters drawn hyperrealistic, or when I see really detailed or realistic characters drawn like traditional cartoons, something about it just...really bothers my nitpicky side. No matter how good the art is objectively.

It makes me sad because as a kid, being a 2D animator was my dream job. I changed my mind as I grew older, but it still hurts to see Disney's 2D animation go the way of the dodo. It's not that I don't find 3D animation awesome, it's just that seeing a drawing come to life is just exhilarating to me.

Frozen's animation was nice but I found the style pretty generic, especially compared to some of the concept art.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-21 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I want Disney to do a 2D version of Anna and Elsa, just like they did with Merida and Rapunzel. But I also want them to design a 3D model of all the other princesses. And then everything can mix and match and it would be good.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-22 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
That would be pretty cool.
