Stuff you've abandoned as your tastes changed

[personal profile] dethtoll 2014-05-20 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to listen to death metal. Then I realized how much of it all sounds the fucking same.

At this point if I had to pick three bands I'd want to go back and listen to again, it'd be Bolt Thrower and Death.

What don't I abandon? I mean, I look back fondly on stuff I loved when I was younger (and may even try to get back into the fandom). But once that stuff is abandoned it stays that way.

I revisited Tori Amos (my first boyfriend and I were both fans) and found her phrasing to be just, wrong.

hahahaha

I still have mad love for Tori, but I recently listened to that "cake out in the rain" song and realized that all the Toriphors I thought were so profound back in the day were 100% cake-in-the-rain caliber.

Anime. I'm sort of glad the anime boom is finally over in the US, so there's no more weird animuesque cartoons anymore.

Eeehhhh I wouldn't say that. There's quite a few cartoons that are out now and have come out in the past 5-10 years that resemble or have major anime-esque influences.

animated tv, both western and japanese. it just doesn't have the same appeal it did when i was younger. i don't consider watching it childish or anything, and more power to other people if they still enjoy it, but it's all meh to me now. even praised stuff like adventure time or avatar.
i still watch reruns of the 90s batman cartoon from time to time, though. it's just that good.

Video games.

Heh. I listen to death metal casually and will probably never listen to it other than casually. Same with The Decembrists and most of the rest of the intelligent hipster bands my friends like so much.

Lots of things -- my first fandoms were Legend of Zelda and The Phantom of the Opera, and while I still have a lot of nostalgic love for both, they're not really a big part of my life these days in any way.

I used to LOVE Tom Robbins, but the more books I read by him, the less love I had. Same process (but slower) with Flannery O'Conner and Salman Rushdie.

As I've gotten older, my tastes have shifted a lot from complicatedly grim-beautiful media about miserable people having miserable sex in sad rooms to more optimistic primary-color stuff like the MCU. I'm not entirely sure why.

I wouldn't say I've abandoned this one, but I don't like Rent nearly as much as I did in my early twenties. I still love some of the music, but it has an idealism* that's just easier to buy into when you're college age.

*I mean in terms of philosophy. There's nothing idealistic about half your friends dying of AIDS. I realize that.

Licensed genre fiction. I used to read the Forgotten Realms and Warhammer 40K novels, and while I'd still admit that there are a few rare gems, they're overwhelmingly awful. Well above Sturgeon's Law of 90% - more like 99%.

Oh and JRPGs, for the most part. And anime - though that's because anime's changed, not my tastes. I still like a lot of the older stuff.

Oh, god, yeah, I'm done with licensed genre fiction. I'll still read every new Ciaphas Cain book, but that's about it.

I think what broke it for me was Stalker: Southern Comfort, which was beyond bad.

Ditto.

I use to read all of the Star Trek novels and adored the Star Wars EU - but then I hit a whole bunch of them that were utter crap and, well, fanfic happened. Haven't gone back since.

Licensed genre fiction is really bad but I still enjoy it, partly for nostalgia, partly because I still like the things I liked about it when I was a kid.

It's like the Kraft mac and cheese of books

I still need to catch up with the Halo books.

Couldn't really stand most other licenced fiction, but they were suprisingly decent on average (ignore the videogame adaptation and the other book by the same guy).

Like Mass Effect 3, Halo 4 sorta killed my interest in the series though. Will see if I can rekindle a little of that love.

My music taste has changed a lot, but I figure that's pretty normal and not really noteworthy?

The big one for me is anime. I was never hardcore into it, but I did watch a lot of the big series of the time. Now I find even shows I liked back then to be really poorly written and boring.

Anime. I want to like it but I'm just not into it right now. Makes me a bit sad.

Anime and jpop/visual kei. I just sort of grew out of it. My current music is country music and I don't think I'll lose a taste for it any time soon because my family and friends are all for goings to concerts together.

Hm. Nothing, really. My tastes don't change so much as they grow and become more inclusive. A thing may no longer be my favorite, but I don't really actively dislike things I used to like.

Anime and Manga tbh, I used to read/watch a lot of it as a teenager but as I got older my interest in it petered out.

Live action fandoms. I still watch a few live action TV shows, but I don't get very fannish about them. The fandoms just don't have the things that interest me. It's all webcomics, anime, manga, and video games for me now.

Comic books.

And anime. I still watch a few choice shows, but I don't try to watch every series out there.

Anime. To be fair, I was never a hardcore anime/manga fan and gamer like the rest of my friends in high school who tried to convert me by introducing me to the "classics". But that didn't stop me from having a terrible weaboo phase. (I actually got to visit Japan on a school exchange, and that gave me a much greater appreciation of Japanese culture and history, beyond animation.) Once I lost that friend group, my interest in anime/manga petered out.

Also books in general. I used to read like crazy, devouring several books a week. Now I can spend hours in a library and walk out without borrowing anything. It just feels like I've read it all before and there's nothing that interests me. I've especially been burnt out on fantasy novels, ugh.

Yaoi manga. I'm still into other manga genres, and I still check now and then to see if my favorite yaoi mangaka have done anything new, but mostly I've moved on. Just got tired of all the cliches, but I miss the community a little, it was a revelation being into media that was so aggressively focused on appealing to the female gaze.

I abandoned Supernatural. I feel bad about it too because I loved it so much at first. I have seen like two episodes of this season.
