See, I'm a slash fan and this is actually pretty hard for me, since I DO appreciate a good friendship. But also, to myself, friendship and romance have always been close. To explain: I'm obviously not romantic with most of my friends - but the reverse is true: I never became romantic with someone who wasn't a damn good friend prior.

I think that's part of why some subset of slash fic appeals to me, because it's more often than het written as buddies who have sex. And I like that.

But, half of the time I'm like: So am I going to squee over their friendship, or am I going to ship 'em? (My icon is relevant).

OP

Oh! Don't get me wrong, I certainly do NOT think that slash fans can't appreciate a good friendship. Far from it.

It's just that after nearly ten years of interacting with slash fans, I'm convinced that there is a certain contingent of really insistent "they HAVE to be gay! They obviously cannot be straight! Gen devalues the true extent of their love!" slashers who seem so personally invested in it, so hyperbolic and unrealistic about what a romantic relationship entails, and so incapable of comprehending the idea of platonic intimacy that I can't help think there's more to their mindset than just really, really, really liking slash.
