Weirdly specific tropes/elements you love using

(Anonymous) 2014-05-24 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
We've had so many threads about the tropes you love to see in fiction. What about the ones you love to use? What odd little things crop up over and over in the stuff you write/draw/create?

A few of my weirdly specific ones:
- Characters getting really shy about telling a coworker or teammate "I consider us friends/family"
- Platonic (or just "we are not in good enough health to do anything non-platonic right now") cuddling in hospital beds
- Characters being briefly afraid that they're dreaming or hallucinating when the person they're pining over makes a move on them, and then deciding that "This must be really happening, because when I daydream about it I at least have some game, as opposed to turning into a fumbling idiot as I appear to have done now."

I'm not sure this is precisely what you're asking, but I use eating/drinking situations a lot to break up scenes that are heavy on dialogue, in the sense that the stage directions break up the A said / B said. I guess I feel as though this also gives some concrete visuals to ground the scene.

I love to use platonic hospital bed cuddling too. *High five*

Highly articulate characters who're shocked by something getting spluttery or speechless show up an awful lot in my writing, too.

^5!

There may or may not be one of these happening at this very moment in the fic I'm working on in another window. *shifty look* I also love the related thing where someone's all, "I can totally explain this!" and they're gearing up for either some eloquent explanation or an outright denial, but then they just sigh and give up and say something really awkward but heartfelt.

Er, fucked up sexual situations, Twilight Zone endings, pining resulting in anger, just pining, dub con, non con. That's pretty much all the tropes/kinks I use.

LBR though, those are the best tropes.

do you... I mean, you wouldn't happen to have any recommendations for any of those weirdly specific tropes you have there, would you

Character A is somehow convinced character B is dead and then character B randomly turns up on their doorstep only for character A go into a complete freakout, up to the point of threatening to shoot B - not because they are that angry, but because they are still convinced B is dead and this thing that came to them is a hallucination or, better still, a demon.

Haven't got a chance to use this trope yet, but man, do I want to.

Also, high five for cuddling in hospital beds *_* And while we are on the subject of h/c, I bloody adore it when A holds B when B is having a meltdown (preferably over A).

All of this is gen, too. Sappy gen is my weakness.

damn, I should have used this in my "House shows up at Cameron's place after the series finale when she still thinks he's dead" fic. Instead she gets very startled for a second and then yells at him.

-Characters that are introduced as badasses and then reveal they are actually dorks.
-Shipping characters who have very different hair colours.
-Nightmares. I cannot write a fanfic without there being nightmares involved. I cannot write original fic that involves nightmares. It's strange.

Why am I grinning like a loon upon seeing this topic? I wish I knew, but until I can figure it out, here are my tropes!

1. Female characters with serious psychological issues that stem from bad relationships with female relatives
2. Characters making business deals in night clubs.
3. Using liquor to display power rankings (with whiskey doubles denoting the most powerful characters in an environment)
4. Having major events occur near/in fountains.
5. Using autumn as the timeframe for stories with a happy ending (or at least part of it, most often the beginning) and selecting springtime if the story will end horribly for the characters.

Characters who are tough military types with absolutely no romantic experience getting defensive about it when their partners express confusion/amusement. It feels painfully stereotyped, but I like it as a trope.

I'm starting to realize that I use car accidents to introduce the OC into the canonverse. The OC usually will hit one of the main (or lesser) canon characters. I've done this about 2 or three times.

I also once did the dream within a dream within a dream stunt once. That shit annoys the fuck out of readers, and me to be honest, but something about that is so messed up I can't help but like it.

The only thing I can think of is that my RP characters, once they fall in love, are fiercely devoted to the point where sometimes their whole world can practically revolve around their partner. I try to mitigate it by indicating that yes, they have jobs and friends that they do give time to, but most RP scenes are with the partner in question.
