Writing in character is a skill that needs to be developed over time. When I started I couldn't even write my OWN characters in character all the time, but I got better. And it was still fun at the time even if I look back and GROAN because of the terrible. I thought it was GOOD at the time (though there is some horrible fic I liked at the time).

So I argue: Write fic for 1) the experience you need to become a good writer and 2) fun!

Yes, absolutely, all of this. The majority of fic writers start out being unbelievably shitty and more often than not they do not realize that. Which is a good thing, because otherwise they wouldn't have the incentive to continue. And which also happens to be the reason they post their works in the first place.

Voila, OP, you have to wonder no more.

Yup. Good thoughts.

I once came across some early writings in another fandom for one of the really great writers in my fandom and tbh they were awful. I was shocked. But it showed how much her writing had improved over time.
