I read this secret as I'm in the middle of an hour of research on a tiny detail that literally will show up once in this fic I'm writing, and honestly matters more to me than to the reader because it helps me keep the story accurate in my head. This is after my hour of researching if the Falcon was gay or not, because I swore I read somewhere that he was but now I can't find anything about that (though I've found a detailed list of every other Marvel character who has said they're gay)

I read this secret and wonder why, then, I don't get more hits on my factually correct, in-character fics.

Writing in character is a skill that needs to be developed over time. When I started I couldn't even write my OWN characters in character all the time, but I got better. And it was still fun at the time even if I look back and GROAN because of the terrible. I thought it was GOOD at the time (though there is some horrible fic I liked at the time).

So I argue: Write fic for 1) the experience you need to become a good writer and 2) fun!

From what I've seen, most of the time when those kinds of fics pop up, the author usually has a friend who's heavily in that fandom and almost successfully dragged the author into it. 'Almost successfully' equates to the author's done everything *but* looked at the source material.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-24 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't it obvious? Because they want to.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-24 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Because fanfic can only be a scene/episode/whatever that would fit perfectly into canon. It's sickening how all these fans have different ideas and interpretations and then inflict them on others by writing and posting them!

Entitled much?

lolling at your AO3 mockup so hard, OP :D Excellent job!

"smacking the shit out of" them is too extreme for me in terms of intensity, but IA with you in spirit. Except for the fics that are actually entertainingly bad or ridiculous. My fandom life would have a small void in it without the existence of "My Immortal."

I don't get why people like OOC fic so much. When I read fic, I want to read the character acting like the character because I want to read about that character.

Different tastes and all that I suppose. If something is too OOC I just x out and go find something else. It can be a little confusing at times when the character is nothing like the canon counterpart, but in the end...people are going to write what they want, and it's not worth getting really upset over. (Don't get me wrong, I understand your irritation because I've felt it as well...but, people do what they want and they like what they like.)

Devil's advocate....someone has to do it.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-24 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
People interpret characters differently. I give a fic a shot if I see the author is seriously trying to go somewhere with it and they keep the characterization consistent. But if it's one of those sugar rush AU's where you know they're not trying, bleh, I close it and move on.

I don't like wildly OOC so yeah, those fics irritate me so I just don't read them and move on if it becomes really obvious.

But having said that I have occasionally over the years read things where I think "this is slightly OOC for canon but I can sort of imagine them acting that way if for a tweak of the canon events here and there" - but this comes with its own problems. Sometimes a really good fanon version of a character becomes so popular that everyone copies it and then you eventually get back to wildly OOC fic. It's all part of the rich circle of life within fic I guess...

NO WAY. Do people enjoy things differently than you do? This is horrible, horrible news. What has the world come to? I can't believe things have gotten so terrible.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-24 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure the last fic I researched probably put me on a government watch list, given that it involved explosives, neurotoxins, brainwashing, the WDC no-fly list and PTSD triggers.

So…I can sort of understand why someone wouldn't want to do that. :D

lmao i'm pretty surprised by the fact that there's so much positive response to this secret. more people read here than write, i guess?

i feel like maybe you should step away from the computer for a while if this is actually something that makes you angry, op. a lot of authors just don't take fandom that seriously and they just write for fun because it makes them happy. i mean, no one's getting paid, no one owes you good fic, and you don't owe anyone your attention. just backbutton out.

...Is it bad that the graphic for this secret made me laugh really hard, because I can relate?

I mean, it's just fanfic, I don't want to get judgmental about how other fans have fun with their fandoms, but this is pretty much why I don't even bother looking for fanfic anymore. More power to those who want to write the stuff, do what makes you happy... but what makes me happy is stuff that's reasonably close to the source material, and I almost never seem to encounter that. :P

(And before anyone says "then write some", I do. I write the kind of stuff I would like to read, and rarely read other fanfics unless someone I trust recs me some. And I'm cool with that, I have so much fun writing I don't have a lot of time for reading.)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-24 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS.

There's so much OOC crap out there that I hardly ever read fic anymore. I just know I'm going to be sorely disappointed.

lmao

Sorry, I want to comment on the actual content of the secret, but before that, I want to chime in to say I applaud your effort (or the effort of whoever made that graphic). :D

Anyway, while it is a wee bit entitled, I feel you, OP. I've gotten ridiculously stingy about just what fics I will read purely on the basis of "fuck it I love that <10% of good fanfic but I just do not have time to wade through that 90% crap".

This secret is terrific.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I understand the people here saying writing should be fun. I don't understand why that translates to "writing completely OOC." If you want to write something that is that OOc, try original fiction. If you're writing fanfic, the whole point is for it to be fics about the character, not for it to be fics about characters who are so far removed from canon that they are unrecognizable.
