I read this secret as I'm in the middle of an hour of research on a tiny detail that literally will show up once in this fic I'm writing, and honestly matters more to me than to the reader because it helps me keep the story accurate in my head. This is after my hour of researching if the Falcon was gay or not, because I swore I read somewhere that he was but now I can't find anything about that (though I've found a detailed list of every other Marvel character who has said they're gay)

I read this secret and wonder why, then, I don't get more hits on my factually correct, in-character fics.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-24 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Because the majority of readers is like the majority of writers - they just don't have those high standards you hold yourself to and they don't care.

The unfortunate truth.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-24 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Amen.

In my fandom, all the silly, fluffy, brainless OOC fic gets tons of reviews, faves, kudoes, etc. The deep, thought-provoking, in-character fics? I'm one of the few who leaves feedback.

Then people want to know why no one writes the good stuff.

I've been sorely tempted to go over to "the dark side" several times, myself, but I just can't bring myself to do it yet.

/says as she has three different tabs open to various informational websites all for the sake of one freaking scene.

I completely agree. With all of it.

I still do the research and wrestle the canon because it's fun, and because it matters to me, It's like putting in an easter egg .. for yourself.

A fic I spent maybe two hours on, tops, is way more popular than fics I've spent months on. Idk man, people just like fluffy stuff.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-24 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
can i have that detailed list?

I'm not saying this is definitely the case, but it's not impossible that your fic is impeccably researched but just not a good story. I've read plenty of fic by authors who obviously knew the canon well, but whose plots were boring and overdone or whose dialogue was flat or etc. Nothing to make me cringe, but nothing to get excited about, either.

DA

This is a problem I have with my own fic. It tends to be 10000 obscure canon references scrupulously researched, plus angst, plus no plot.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
This.

I read plenty of historical fiction and yes, there's stories where there's poor research + bad writing, good research + fantastic writing... but there's also stories where the research might not be all there, but the writing is. Or the time period has been meticulously researched, but the story itself doesn't work - the writing's not there.

Falcon isn't gay, Tumblr misunderstood something and ran with it.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Link? I'm curious as to what they were confused about and how.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
That could be Tumblr's motto, to be honest.

"we misunderstand something and run with it."

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
oh my god this is it.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha!! Too true!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
What was it? They misinterpreted Fallon's joke?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think it was that. I'm honestly not entirely sure.

I really need to stop this too. Less because of a hits vs no hits issue, but just because it gobbles up all my writing time/energy.
