There are. Read the book The Gift of Fear, it's excellent on this topic.

This guy's parents, teachers, acquaintances, they all must have seen something was wrong. And they all chose to ignore the little warning signs.

edit: Btw, I've skimmed through the alleged 150-page manifest of this guy and if it's real, he's your textbook hate-filled psychopath that has became more and more radicalized through his adolescence and clearly, the people around him didn't pay attention to it. I'm not saying I blame them or that it's their fault, just that we should learn from that as a society and learn to defend ourselves against dangerous psychopaths/sociopaths like this and do the best to prevent their actions.

Seriously. All he talked about with his best friend was torturing and murdering people for having sex. How was this not a huge red flag?

There were many many red flags. Police even came to his flat to investigate because someone who saw his videos on youtube tipped them off. But unfortunately, this wasn't enough.

I'm sorry for ranting about this, but the reply above NO ONE COULD KNOW is just so so wrong.

No, I understand. I've been reading it, too, and I'm physically ill and angry. This could have been avoided. :/

Yeah, his case is so textbook it hurts. There are no special snowflakes in the world and this is yet another case of a person without conscience angry at the world and blaming a specific group of people for it.

I finally got to the end, and honestly I regret reading it. The last part where he wishes he could be a dictator over a society that keeps women imprisoned for procreation, while the rest would be starved to death in fucking concentration camps. I don't know what's more horrifying; That someone like that existed, or that there are probably more like him out there.

There are definitely people like him out there. They may not necessarily turn to such extreme violence, but it doesn't mean they aren't dangerous people without any empathy for fellow humans. But the "good" thing is that there are certain red flags about the danger they represent and there are means we can take to prevent the destruction they cause ... like this guy's parents apparently tried to do, calling the police etc., but the police fucked up on this one :(

The gift of fear is mostly a bunch of bullshit, and packed to the gills with false positive nonsense, and encourages an incredibly paranoid mindset to be frank.

And I'm not saying that this guy didn't have warning signs (he did), but the idea that they will always exist simply isn't the case. Plus if we want to dive into the fact that there were warning signs we could dive down into that, but the question about what you can do with them - and the issue of how many harmless individuals you risk othering, well things get complicated.

and encourages an incredibly paranoid mindset to be frank.

Haha, no, it does the opposite and this makes me think you didn't read it (or didn't finish it at any rate).

Well aside from some momentary fit of madness, which may happen, the warning signs do exist. And evaluating them is an incredibly complicated process as you said - but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to do that or that we should ignore them.

I'll be honest it's been years. But there's a reason it's pretty much a joke in the LEO field, and so many people ridicule him.

Ok, so you criticize something without even being able to cite the reason or remembering much about what you criticize. I don't worship the book, but I'm still grateful to it for giving me some useful advice.

I'm a busy man with too much knowledge I need to be up on to remember full blown critiques of a fucking New York Times best seller that Oprah thinks is worthwhile.

Those twelve little words are the minimum necessary amount of data I need to recall to show it's worthless.
