I won't comment on anime or manga, but it is kind of hilarious how few shits most Japanese fanartists/fanauthors give about cultural authenticity/accuracy when they're creating for a Western fandom. Even the few who bother with research can't seem to wrap their heads around the absence of the senpai/kouhai system (in work, school, or otherwise), for example, and shoehorn it in when it's hilariously out of place.

It's not like Western fans are much better about Japanese fandoms, but lol, sometimes people like to pretend that Western fans are unique in their not giving a shit/getting cultural things terribly wrong, and they so very aren't.

Do you have examples of this? It sounds potentially hilarious.

Oh lawd every fandom ever. Mine are primarily military, but if a character is a year older than another character, even if they're the same rank, even if the younger one doesn't defer to the older one in the slightest in canon, in fic/comics he'll suddenly be all polite and comically inept (and call him senpai) and the older one will be constantly looking after him (because that's what a good senpai does!). No matter how ridiculously OOC it happens to be. Do you read Japanese? There's plenty of that pixiv.

It's also hilarious as all get out to watch the Manliest American Army Men acting like teenaged Japanese boys, too. And eating Japanese Christmas cake. And going to public baths. And having the youngest one pour drinks for everybody. And buying beer out of vending machines. And weeping during sex.

DA

LOL. I know what you mean. I'd never looked into the Japanese side of fandom for Western media until MCU fandom came around, and then it was all, "Hahahaha, what is this?"

Do you happen to have some links? I've never seen Japanese fandoms for Wester stuff and I need to.

Seconding. I really want links for MCU stuff for this oh man.

Oh man are the fandoms you're talking about including your shooty game ones? I would love to see and read about soldiers eating Christmas cake!

Hah this is reminding me of whenever I read fic that takes place where the author doesn't reside, there'll usually be something off or indicative that this is some kind of Country-fied Other Country. Like Australianisms showing up in my American highschool AU.

The shooty ones. Primarily Call of Duty and Resident Evil/Biohazard, though I've also seen it for shit like Army of Two and Uncharted. Familiar with any of these y/n? The Pixiv tags for each (try "CoD4" and "MW2" will yield no end of glory.)

I read Japanese! What fandoms are these for? Because if it's anything I'm familiar with I have GOT to get some recs from you, I never even considered this before.

Like I said above, mostly Call of Duty and Resident Evil, but some Army of Two and other Western games.

ah, sorry, I missed that comment >_<
Dang, though, I am unfamiliar with any of these canons :((((((((( but I am definitely going to think of something to look up fic for now XD

Lol if you ever wanted to see Soap MacTavish cry during sex, I've got you covered.

Hell I think I even have one of Captain Price crying.

Nothing could quite live up to what I'm imagining.

But it's not like proper westernised stuff is unheard of right. Like Black Lagoon, Jormungand etc have it down to pat. Has that not penetrated the wider cultural conscience of shooter fans or what?

Uh, well, depends. Fujoshi tend to shoehorn BL tropes into every canon they get their hands on, which has some pretty hilarious results in Western games; the male fans, if they're doing anything even remotely porny, will genderswap and de-age all of the characters until everyone is a tiny schoolgirl with the barest resemblance to the original character (they don't even give girl!Ghost the skullmask half the time, just the sunglasses) so... it's original fiction where some of the characters have names derived from a licensed franchise. Touhou/gender-swapped CoD crossovers were really popular for a while, but they were almost uniformly less interesting than they sound because no one could be assed to keep anyone in character.

Sometimes male fans doing gen will do proper Westernized stuff (though sometimes even then it's more true to the JSDF than the militaries abroad, which is always jarring) and at least one of the fujoshi also does it pretty damned well - though it turns out she's Korean. I'd say most of the time they don't care and/or aren't interested in that when it comes to fanshit. The girls want kawaii versions of the characters and the guys want kawaii girl!versions of the characters. Few actually want to sexualize the grizzled ossans of shooters, and many of those who do turn out to be gay men. They're just so far outside of the Japanese masculine ideal as to be almost comical.

Bear in mind that the broad popularity of FPS games and their attendant culture of militaria are a very, very recent phenomenon in Japan. It was rare to find anyone who played kusoge when I was there in 2005-06 even amongst the nerdiest nerds, and only the hardcore Americastans had Xboxes and played HALO. Plenty of my D&D-playing ultradork companions from the moon kingdom had never played Wolfenstein, DOOM, or even Counterstrike. Then dubbed release of MW2 got the ball rolling, then BF3 became explosively popular. It's virtually all a post-2009 phenomenon. Give it time; they're getting better. (One popular fujoshi artist has gone from drawn vaguely gun-shaped black blocks, to half-decent firearms that belong to the wrong military but were probably the first reference that came up on Google image search, to lovingly detailed personalized weapons appropriate to each character from each nation, all in the course of two years.)

I was rereading Matoh's Fake earlier today. A running gag is JJ flinging himself on Dee, calling "Dee-sempai!"

You also see a lot of this in Tiger & Bunny doujin.
