I think that maybe the rampant paranoia of the show is getting to you, anon. Relax. They have a wide variety of interesting characters all with distinct personalities. No one is trying to 'play' you. They're just trying (and succeeding) in writing fascinating characters.

I kind of get what you're saying about the clones being cliche, but you lost me at Felix.

He does a lot more than just have sex with guys. And most of the OB fans I've come across are queer themselves, some not even into dudes at all, so the idea of him just being there for shallow slash fans is completely ridiculous.

Yes, they write characters to appeal to a variety of audiences so the show will get more viewers and the producers will make more $$$.

*shrug* It's not going to cause an apocalypse if you don't want to watch it, OP.

(I personally love it. I blackmailed both SO and Spawn into watching "just the first 2 episodes" and they both wound up getting hooked and marathoning the S1 DVD and the eps we have DVR'd. ~ Yes, there are certainly bits now and again that are pretty blatant fanservice, but I'm happy that they've distributed the sexy bits among three orientations, that there is such a range of female characters, and that they've given Art more to do in S2.)

Anyway, imo, while the variety of characters is part of the appeal, I think the plot itself is pretty engrossing.

Alison is my favorite. But I think Sarah is a really great protagonist. Helena has grown on me a lot during season 2.

Except for Felix's most meaningful relationships are with Sarah and Alison respectively? Even accounting for shipper goggles, there's not much material there to work with in terms of long term pairings.

Maybe they could've done something with Paul if it wasn't for him being such a dull board.

meh. they probably are trying to appeal to different viewers all at the same time but so what. i'm more concerned that this show is getting the BEST SHOW EVER reaction from the 'nets when it's just a decently entertaining thriller/mystery/sci fi show with elements to keep more dedicated viewers talking.

OP, I think the point of the characters is to simply showcase just how different the clones are from one another. They're all exceptionally different from one another, and I often forget it's the same actress playing, what, six or seven characters at once?

Maybe, but the show is also genuinely good and entertaining. I don't relate to any of the characters, and I still like it. And Felix might be eyecandy, but I don't think he's really slash fan material? There's hardly anyone to 'ship' him with (except for his morgue boyfriend, who's barely shown up so far).

I tried to like Orphan Black (twice, once each series) but I just found it dull. I know what you mean about it feeling like my boxes were being ticked.

They had a lot of strong attractive women characters, good. A gay guy and a lesbian woman, also good. I got to see the gay guy's bumcheeks and he's good looking, also fun. Running about the place, good. Science fictiony plot, great.

It was definitely specifically designed for geeks like me. It wouldn't have mattered if I'd liked it, but I was entertained at no point. I kept waiting for the sum of the parts to coalesce. They didn't.
