NPH deserves to lose for that hideous get-up he wore to the Met Gala.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
read that in Edna Mode's voice

Well, you might have had a point until you tried to disqualify him for not being as hot as the guy you prefer. That kind of steals your moral highground.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

It's completely unfair because he guy I wanted to win is soooo hotter.

I love that it's thrown in there like it's a perfectly logical reason why one person deserves an award over another.

Whut? They're both pretty talented, and I don't think Ramin outshines Neil in some very elaborate way. I saw Karimloo in Love Never Dies, and while he's a good performer, it was certainly not the best I've seen. How about, maybe the person who wins actually did a better job?

Also, Hedwig is pretty awesome. Wish I could go see it. Haters gonna hate.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe it's less to do with 'tolerance and acceptance' and more to do with the fact that everyone adores Neil Patrick Harris? or maybe they just think his show is better.

because i gotta be honest, this way of attributing things solely to an interesting in promoting acceptance and tolerance is not a good look. it's a bit paranoid and i think it's very rarely true and... it just has nasty implications.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"it just has nasty implications."

MTE. It makes me cringe so much. It seems like they're implying a gay person can only win the award if people are patronizing them for the sake of "acceptance".

Is there a reason to think that NPH winning would be about a political agenda? It's annoying when every time someone from a marginalized group wins something, there are people deciding that they only won it because of that.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The pity award. It's like a pity fuck but you get a shiny souvenir.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS, thank you.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
NPH, as a many-time Tony host, is practically guaranteed the Tony. Fortunately, he really is awesome as Hedwig, but in a world where politics didn't figure in Jefferson Mays would have a fighting chance for his role in A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-26 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be happy for either of them to win, although I'm rooting most for Ramin. I just want him to have all good things.

I love Ramin, but the fact that he was so perfect as Enjolras combined with the age discrepancy between him and Valjean... I can't help but think of it as a terrible miscast.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Well neither of them is probably going to win so you shouldn't really have to worry.

Jefferson Mays is probably going to win (NPH said that he thought so on a radio interview). Dude plays eight roles.

Jefferson Mays deserves to win over both of them tbh. But if it doesn't go to him then it should go to Neil. Hedwig is amazing and it's wonderful to finally see it on Broadway. Les Mis has been done and done far better. This revival is a huge disappointment.

Some political agenda about acceptance? At the Tonys? I... hate to break this to you OP but... NPH isn't their first gay nominee.

Don't diss Hedwig.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I love me some Ramin Karimloo but I was lucky enough to catch him in this role and he did...acceptably but he just wasn't a mature enough actor/singer to pull off Jean Valjean yet. He did alright but he wasn't great. Give him a few years and reward him for it when he really deserves it!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Jefferson Mays should win for the incredible job he does portraying eight different characters in A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder. Alas, there's a very good chance NPH will beat him because he's the theater world's darling (he's hosted the Tony Awards multiple times, for heaven's sake). Ramin Karimloo doesn't even figure into it. His performance in this extremely disappointing revival is fine, but far from the best Jean Valjean performance there's been.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
As it happens, I saw Hedwig last night, and it was fucking great. I don't know about this other guy, he's probably great too, but NPH winning a prize for his performance in Hedwig would be hard to reasonably construe as a pity award or a political move, because the show's fantastic and he's totally fantastic in it. So there's that.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The second you included an actor's attractiveness as part of your reason for them winning an award, you made your opinion look vapid and silly.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Hedwig but I'm sick to death of NPH and think he's really miscast.
