This guy was not your average dudebro at all. If a woman had paid attention to Rodger he would have been like, "Nope. Not good enough. That guy over there has two girls paying attention to him. I should have ALL THE WOMEN BECAUSE IT IS MY BIRTHRIGHT!" As much as he said he wasn't sex, it seemed he didn't want to have sex for sex sake (reading his manifesto, he never talked about being sexually aroused the way people would say. It seemed he didn't really have a sex drive.) He just wanted sex because the popular people were doing it. It was a status symbol. A dudebro would be happy to have a girlfriend. Most of the time, they would shut up and go away if they had one. This guy wouldn't. He would make a tally of how many women talked to him like they was tally up points during a game of Scrabble.

He was a real life Patrick Bateman. Rodgers was an American Psycho.

Yeah, he didn't want a "woman" - like most dudes who complain about "women" not liking them or paying attention to them, he wanted a hot woman. Specifically, a hot sorority blonde. He was looking for a status symbol, not companionship. A commodity that he was "owed" by behaving in a certain way - like a "gentleman", as he put it.

Like the dude who shot up the women's gym, who specifically wanted a hot, younger woman. He wasn't bad-looking either. If he'd just put up a dating profile and gone for women his own age in his own league, he would have had scores of dates. But the women he wanted didn't want him. Too fucking bad bro. That's life. If you think all other women are unworthy and you only want the "best" ones, why does it surprise you when the best ones only want the "best" guys?

Exactly. Everything was about status to him - the fact that he described items he owned as stuff like "my $300 dollar Prada sweater I got from Neiman Marcus" or whatever, the fact that he insisted his mother buy him a new BMW because the one he had wasn't "good enough," and on and on. In his mind, having hot blonde girlfriends was another check mark on the list of status symbols he had or wanted.

I think he fixated on that in particular because that was the one thing his shitloads of money couldn't buy.

Yeah, he was a ticking time bomb, and there was little that could be done to prevent this, except maybe make him take the medicine he was given.

I think his obsession with blonde women actually came from his first crush, who was blonde. I feel so bad for her, her father said she was devastated about it and she couldn't even remember the guy, aside from him being a 'weird kid'.

Yes, the mental illness was there. But he was also rich and had access to the best healthcare. The guy had tons of psychiatrists. The MRA bullshit WAS a part of what happened. Not the only thing, but a part, and to say it was just mental illness is extremely scary. Because the fact of the matter is, is that his views are shared but thousands of other men. It doesn't exist in a vacuum.

The "He did it because he was MRA" excuse is bullshit considering that 1) the majority of his victims were men. 2) he blamed EVERYONE for the "injustices" of his life. Not just women but men as well. He even had a plan to murder his ten year old brother because he thought that it was an "injustice" that the kid was not socially awkward.

He hated the ENTIRE world. Men were not going to be spared in his hunt. And why did he hate the world because he thought everyone was out to get him. That everyone was putting him down on purpose. In short, he was mentally ill. He was taking medication for schizophrenia. You can't apply the same logic to your average dudebro as you would with this man. Your average dudebro is sane. He can be reason with even if it takes you awhile. And there's a good chance that he'll even grow out and grow up out of his thinking as he matures with age. This man could have not done the same thing because his brain was defective.

Stop comparing sane people with insane people. They work on two different levels of logic.

The men were killed because of his vendetta against women. The argument that the MRA stuff he internalized totally had no part in it what-so-ever is bullshit. Was the 140 pages of him ranting about the inferiority of women, how they held the most rights in society, how they needed to be fought against because of their 'sex power' not enough evidence of their ideology rubbing off on the perfect storm of mental illness and psychopathy?

They thought the same bullshit he did, why do you think the people of PUAhate took down their forum? Because it was full of the same 'revolution against feminism, murder women, cunts, sluts, blarghle!" he was spouting. The cashe of some of their pages showed this. He. Did. Not. Exist. In. A. Vacuum.

The men were collateral. They were in the way of his plan to torture and kill women. He was planning to kill many more women than he ended up having access to.

It's awful that anyone died, but if you try to argue that women weren't his primary target, you're being deliberately obtuse.

and by 'collateral' I mean in terms of his motivations for killing. obviously they were human beings who didn't deserve to die.

Not disagreeing with you, because it WAS part of it, but the fundamental problem is that he didn't want help. I'm quite sure that his upbringing had something to do with it. Ultimately, no matter what the resources are that you have, you have to want to get better or all the therapy and access to meds doesn't make a difference. You have to actually put effort into therapy and you have to be willing to take the meds.

Agreed. Unless you forcibly commit somebody, no money in the world will make somebody get the help they need, either through medication or simple therapy.
