To everybody saying or hoping they'll move to other characters instead of recasting: really? If other studios could recast Spider-Man, Superman and Batman after only a couple of years and make a load of money, why do you think Marvel will just put their big names in the fridge?

That's not to say I'm not gonna have a hard time with some of them, because I will, but it's not a finite story and they will recast.

There aren't any guarantees, of course, but part of the reason I'm allowing myself to hope this is because Marvel's plan so far has been to take things at a slow deliberate pace and to not be too one-note in the films they produce. They're making a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, ffs; you couldn't ask for a better example of the differences between the Marvel model and the Sony/FOX/Warner Bros. model. And frankly, I think that the Spider-Man and Superman franchises are being run into the ground, so I'm definitely backing the Marvel Studios plan for as long as they continue to run with it.

Marvel has already recast Hulk and Rhodey, though. Yes, their movie roster and universe are a lot bigger, but I seriously doubt they will just stop using their characters as the actors walk out. They want to expand their movies, not shrink them with each retiring actor. They might put them on hold for some years but they will all come back with another actor.

Marvel has already recast Hulk and Rhodey, though.

Neither Norton nor Howard was an iconic representation of his character, though; relatively few people watched The Incredible Hulk, and Rhodey didn't have a huge part in Iron Man 1. So Hulk and Rhodey are really not comparable to the other characters under discussion.

They want to expand their movies, not shrink them with each retiring actor.

It's not like the current actors are all leaving at once. As long as Marvel keeps to its two movies a year and, crucially, keeps adding interesting new characters to the MCU (as they've mostly been doing; Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 are the only exceptions so far), they'll keep expanding just fine.

They might put them on hold for some years but they will all come back with another actor.

Depending on what you mean by "some years," that might not be all that different from what I was saying. I don't think anyone is expecting Marvel to never recast Iron Man or Captain America or Black Widow or etc. But there's no rush; there are plenty of other characters and/or teams that Marvel could make films about in the near future.

An Iron Man film starring anyone other than RDJ that came out in the next five or so years would practically guarantee a disappointed audience, for whom RDJ is Iron Man. But if Marvel Studios put off making Iron Man 4 until 2020 or later--which they could easily do if they spent that time making GotG and Captain Marvel and Black Panther and etc. films--then I think the audience would be eager enough for new Iron Man that they'd be a lot more forgiving of a non-RDJ Tony Stark.

Oh, and something I should've mentioned in my previous comment: a really big difference between the MCU and the Spider-Man, Superman, etc. situations is that Marvel isn't planning to reboot its franchise anytime soon. Getting Henry Cavill to replace Brandon Routh as Superman is a much less fraught decision when the entire universe is being rebooted; in fact, it would feel really weird to reboot the universe but keep the same actor. It's not that roles can't be recast even if the universe remains the same, of course, but that's not the default the way it is with reboots.

da - It's 2014. 2020 is only six years away. How's that different from five years or so?

Which is why I said "2020 or later." 2020's the absolute earliest year I could see Iron Man 4 being a good decision; a longer wait would almost certainly be better.

Well, they are making an Ant-Man movie. As long as they're still riding the success of their more popular characters, they can try other characters and see if there's another cash cow out there. The Avengers had a lot of members, after all.

...I don't exactly think they'll drop Iron Man, but they might make him less of a focus. I hope so, anyway.

There's a big difference between the Spiderman, Superman, Batman movies and the MCU that I think would really not allow the same rotating actors.

Spiderman and Batman both had trilogies that very neatly started and ended and are obviously isolated worlds. Superman movies tend to also be isolated universes and be single movies or have only one or two sequels. They're all set up in such a way that they can easily be rebooted and recast (very quickly).

With the MCU they're really building a continuous universe and that means cameos and having the events of movies interact strongly with each other, which also means more ways to cement the characters as they are (particularly as they are portrayed by a particular actor).

For example: Robert Downey Jr. IS Iron Man in this universe. Audiences have already connected with him and associated him with the character, and possibly wouldn't take well to a replacement - the studio would risk people cooling to the character if they recast now. They can't reboot because his three movies and the Avengers movies interact and it would mess with the overall story, and a new actor would certainly be younger (which would clash with some of how he's been characterized) and likely only mimicking RDJ.

The only big MCU character to have a recast is Hulk, and all of his solo movies were weak, unlike the other Avengers. Mark Ruffalo was very well received though, so I doubt they'll be doing another recast since he's already in Avengers 2.
