Well, depending on how long the MCU goes on they will all be replaced. Wouldn't be too hard for most (my limited knowledge of comics makes me think most of these characters have had a replacement/apprentice), though replacing Thor will be a bit odd because he is immortal and I am unsure of whether he had a replacement or not.

They could always just have someone else get Mjolnir for a while. They'd get Thor's powers and Thor could be off...raising kids or ruling Asgard or rehabilitating Loki, or whatever.

It kinda depends on if or when the MCU bubble pops. I'm skeptical that they'll get all of their master plan done before it does.

I found out today that there was a kind of 'What If' mini-comic thing where Natasha took up Mjolnir and became a goddess or something. She got her own statue and everything. It was pretty awesome.

Thor's had a couple of "replacements".

Beta Ray Bill -a cyborg space*horse warrior- never really was considered a 'replacement', but he was the first -and at that point, only- character to lift Mjolnir besides Thor. He's a pretty awesome guy, but unless they somehow tie Sutur into 'Thor 3' -as Sutur was responsible for the destruction of Bill's homeworld-, BRB might be better suited for a future 'Guardians of the Galaxy' movie instead if the MCU wants to do things differently.

(I just want to see BRB on screen, period. *sniffle*)

Then there was the Eric Masterson years, wherein a single/divorced dad and architect had merged with Thor and became his alter-ego (and that's just the layman's explanation). There's been a few others, but BRB and Eric are the two major ones that come to mind for me.

Well, for the two actors mentioned, you've got Bucky and Rhodey who've both been Cap and IM respectively and they're both already there in the MCU so... yeah. Really not that big a deal.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Not for A2! Just, in general. Evans is halfway through his contract (seems likely that A2 and Cap 3 will be his last movies, and he's expressed a desire to move on), and RDJ is unquestionably getting older.

No matter what, they're inevitably going to need to be replaced, simply because Chris Evans is a human being and Captain America is an idea, a fictional character who will never grow old or molder away.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I know buddy. I know.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-27 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Right there with you, OP. Captain America is deeply important to me and has been for a long time, and I was amazed to see how well Chris Evans captured him. I cringe at the thought of some replacement going "I guess my take on Steve Rogers is more based on the character in the Ultimates" and then I have to burn everything down.

Considering how many Avengers there are, I don't think this is a bad thing. I think the movies will retire characters and go to new ones like Iron Fist or Luke Cage rather than stick with current core group and just switch actors. I can see RDJ even making a cameo (since it will be his place that will be headquarters) but not being part of the main cast as Stark.

(vaguely looking forward to the Hawkeye replacement. Not that there's anything wrong with Renner, but since the current run of Hawkeye has been so popular I'd love to see a filmed version of that).

The day they replace any of these actors is the day I stop watching the movies, which probably makes me a bad fan but I don't really care.

Well if Marvel really has the MCU planned all the way until 2028, either they're going to have to replace (most of) the Avengers cast or they're going to have to move on to other things. Like Young Avengers. CAN THEY PLEASE DO YOUNG AVENGERS.

Shhhhh, shhhhh I don't want to think about it. I want to stay in denial for as long as I can.

(And I too liked Bucky!Cap, as painful as the reasons for him being Cap were, but I do not want it at all in the MCU, Bucky needs to find himself first and idk get some kind of closure about what HYDRA did to him.)

I'm just gonna pretend this isn't going to happen because in my mind, no one is Cap but Evans. Same with Iron Man.

I hope when the times comes (either the actors get “too old”, or they want to leave) they'll retire the characters (maybe even bring them back for small cameos) rather than just recasting them. That would be terrible. (And honestly, I don't feel it would work too well in this format. Comics seem to be a bit more forgiving about that kind of thing, but here... Idk.)

To everybody saying or hoping they'll move to other characters instead of recasting: really? If other studios could recast Spider-Man, Superman and Batman after only a couple of years and make a load of money, why do you think Marvel will just put their big names in the fridge?

That's not to say I'm not gonna have a hard time with some of them, because I will, but it's not a finite story and they will recast.

I kind of wish the studios would get it in their heads that working together on a bigger project is beneficial for all. Then they can do some big joint thing, like the Civil War arc and end the whole Avengers/X-Men franchises with a bang, then move on to other super hero groups (not like there is a shortage of those).
