Epic Star Trek reboot fic rant

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Gah, that fic sounds terrible. (I'm thinking it's an Avengers fic, am I right?)

My rant is that I just finished one of the epics of the Star Trek reboot fandom, and yes, I really liked a lot of aspects of it and thought the writing was great, the action scenes were crazy well done, the OCs were delightful and it was overall plotted and paced amazingly for a novel length fic.

But... it was also riddled with mistakes and contradictions - things that didn't affect the plot but at the same time there were enough of them that it almost felt like the author was writing it off the top of her head and had forgotten everything she'd written before, e.g. Kirk's age changing, Spock's full name changing, new OCs being introduced when the author already had a whole raft of them she could have brought back and developed instead. It seemed like one or two beta reads away from what the final product should have been.

And that's not even considering three major plot points which weren't resolved (one I think intentionally because the author had a sequel in mind that has not been written, but the other two seemed like she just forgot about them).

And, on top of that all, I wasn't a fan of Kirk's characterisation, felt the romance was kind of shoe-horned in, and felt we didn't get the payoff we should have about Prime Spock's mindmeld with either of them.

I want to emphasise that overall I thought it was a fantastic fic. But I just finished reading it and have all these thoughts it my head about it and no where to discuss them so F!S gets this rant from me.

What was it? Can you give me a hint? I wonder if I'm thinking of the right thing.

Fine, I'll just say it. Leave No Soul Left Behind by whochick.

Yeah, that's an awful story.

Didn't think it was awful, at all! Just was really bugged by a few things that could have been fixed with a careful beta reader.

Yeah, I thought that was what you were talking about. IA about most of your points, but I still really enjoyed it? Like, it was flawed, but still a great read, for me, and better than a lot of the fanfic that I see. I do disagree about the romance. It worked for me. But then again, I don't like OTT romance, I guess.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone in noticing a few of these flaws. Definitely really liked it and don't think it's overhyped, despite my comments. \

As for the romance, I didn't mind it once they were together - it was how they got together that seemed a bit out of the blue for me.

Not an Avengers fic, but I've read some pretty awful ones of those. Kidfic is a genre I really WANT to like but it never lives up to my expectations.

Ah, kidfic. I've just stopped hoping it will ever be good at this point and try to avoid it. I find it's usually an excuse for authors to indulge in super soppy fluffy cutesy child-adult bonding id fic that I know pushes some people's buttons the right way, but usually only pisses me off.

Have you read this one by any chance? It's MCU-verse, and there's a bit of a twist to the kidficness of it.

That fic is so fucking long that I don't think I even noticed the problems you had with it. If I reread it I probably would. It was one of the first AU fics I read and liked(and one of the longest fics I've ever read), so it holds a special place on my heart despite the flaws. Plus, it's really good and fun.

Well, I read it all in two days so that's probably a part of why I noticed these things. What I really liked about it is that it's an AU that actually makes sense in terms of the world of Star Trek and also kind of fixes the reboot, in that it emphasises the utopian ideals that Star Trek is based on (all life is worth saving kind of thing) as opposed to the bombastic Hollywood blockbuster approach of JJ Abrams. And it was definitely a rollicking good ride of a fic.

But god did those little things really bug me as I was reading it, ha.
