Fic rants

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I want to rant about a fic so badly. Because it could be decent, and is clearly intended to be decent, but crucial elements are just so bad. And I can't sit on it anymore, so I'm not going to give away the fic name or the writer or the fandom, but oh my god.

1. Character A has brown hair. Dark brown hair. He is not blond. The actor was not blond as a child.
.....1b: Continued use of "the blond" to refer to him.

2. Character A and B were turned into children because magic, but they kept their adult minds. Character C continues to snuggle, kiss and lovingly pet-name Character A as if he were her little boy. Character A allows this. Both A and B are treated like children even when alone with the people who know they really aren't.
.....2b: There is bath time that requires grown-up help.

3. Character C and D, who are the ones dealing with Little A and B just escaped to their bedroom to "physically heal their emotional wounds" as the ordeal looks more hopeless.
...3b: It fades to black.

Anyone else have anything to rant about?

Needless epithets drive me up the wall so badly. This one person I follow is a decent writer, but her use of epithets causes my teeth so much gnashing. I don't care that character X is "the wyvern rider" when all she's riding in this fic is her husband.

This is especially annoying when whatever they use for them it too vague OR something you don't know. Sometimes I don't actually know the damn color of the character's eyes.

Re: Fic rants

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I'm so sick of all the use of orbs when referring to eyes. Not to mention all of the decriptors for them being things like sapphire or emerald instread of blue or green.

Also, I hate that when fic refers to character as the American or wherever they come from repeatedly. Or as you stated in your post, by their hair color. Referring to them as the blonde, brunette, or god forbid, the raven-haired. Hell, some fic forgets the -haired part, so I will be sitting there imagining their hair is a bird So fucking annoying.

Wut.

I just sat here for fine minutes and stared into your description hoping it would hold answers. It did not.

Haaa, I once read a fic that was trying to fight against transphobia but instead just bashed the main character for not knowing what a trans person was. It was super awkward.

I have a "positive rant" about fic, if that counts? I found a whole series of [my fictional crush] x OC oneshots...written in the second person. I'm dying inside from happiness. I'm gonna read them all over and over and over and over and

I feel you on getting a characters's hair color wrong. that happens to one character in my fandom all the damn time. I wish I could shove a picture of said character in the writers' faces for proof.

I have about a million things I could rant about concerning fic but I can't think of anything right now.

Re: Fic rants

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I get you on the hair color thing. The number of times I've seen Dean Winchester referred to as blond is boggling.

I don't have much to rant about, though. I usually just backspace out if shit gets bad.

Re: Fic rants

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen Dean referred to as blond so often I actually started questioning if I'd been seeing it wrong all these years. Like, maybe I didn't know the difference between brown and blond well enough or something

Dean Winchester (and by extension Jensen Ackles) is what happens when a person is blond as a young kid, but goes progressively dark as they age. I have a cousin with similar hair.

Epic Star Trek reboot fic rant

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Gah, that fic sounds terrible. (I'm thinking it's an Avengers fic, am I right?)

My rant is that I just finished one of the epics of the Star Trek reboot fandom, and yes, I really liked a lot of aspects of it and thought the writing was great, the action scenes were crazy well done, the OCs were delightful and it was overall plotted and paced amazingly for a novel length fic.

But... it was also riddled with mistakes and contradictions - things that didn't affect the plot but at the same time there were enough of them that it almost felt like the author was writing it off the top of her head and had forgotten everything she'd written before, e.g. Kirk's age changing, Spock's full name changing, new OCs being introduced when the author already had a whole raft of them she could have brought back and developed instead. It seemed like one or two beta reads away from what the final product should have been.

And that's not even considering three major plot points which weren't resolved (one I think intentionally because the author had a sequel in mind that has not been written, but the other two seemed like she just forgot about them).

And, on top of that all, I wasn't a fan of Kirk's characterisation, felt the romance was kind of shoe-horned in, and felt we didn't get the payoff we should have about Prime Spock's mindmeld with either of them.

I want to emphasise that overall I thought it was a fantastic fic. But I just finished reading it and have all these thoughts it my head about it and no where to discuss them so F!S gets this rant from me.

Not an Avengers fic, but I've read some pretty awful ones of those. Kidfic is a genre I really WANT to like but it never lives up to my expectations.

That fic is so fucking long that I don't think I even noticed the problems you had with it. If I reread it I probably would. It was one of the first AU fics I read and liked(and one of the longest fics I've ever read), so it holds a special place on my heart despite the flaws. Plus, it's really good and fun.

Sometimes I just want to post the Turkey City Lexicon (http://www.sfwa.org/2009/06/turkey-city-lexicon-a-primer-for-sf-workshops/) on every fan site there is, because holy shit do I see Burly Detective Syndrome all over the goddamn place. Also there are some people who seem to be allergic to the word "said" which is equally annoying.

Re: Fic rants

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Occasionally I just quit fics if they have more than a certain amount of dialogue without ever using "said". Even if the fic is good, I'm still hyper-aware of the said-bookism.

MLP fandom refers to this as Lavender Unicorn Syndrome. There's a fic with that name on FIMfiction where a magical illness turns everyone in Ponyville into lavender unicorns. (And yes, most of their dialogue is "said the lavender unicorn.")

Re: Fic rants

(Anonymous) 2014-05-28 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Specifically a problem with dude slash, but...there are two characters. They both have penises (or they do when this particular fic problem pops up.) One, for whatever reason, has a scarier-than-average penis, like it's huge or there's knotting or something. The other character does not.

At no point, ever, do the characters ever consider having non-penetrative sex, or sex where Gigandick is not on top. I have never encountered that fic, and I've read thousands.

I get that fandom as a whole seems really focused on the rigid penetrating top/whimpering bottom roles, but come on. Not even a conversation?

People are really weird about the use of 'blond/e,' I've found. I was in the breakroom at work one day when a coworker came back and told me there was a blonde woman asking for me. Said "blonde woman" turned out to be my best friend, who has chestnut brown hair.

OMG. Calling someone 'the blonde' is bad enough, but when they're *NOT BLONDE*.
And wtf - kid bodies but adult minds need 'bathtime help'? That's creeeepy.

I detest when an American fandom (like Supernatural or Teen Wolf) has people calling their mothers 'mum'. Sorry, no, *stoppit*.

I also hate it in a fic when someone has a fever/is sick and they *take no medicine*. Like - dying of snot and coughing so - go to bed, here's a glass of water, hope you can sleep. Huh? Take some damn Xtra Strength Nyquil and feel better! Sheesh! (Obviously if their an alien/it's the 1700's/they have allergies or something, then no, but average Jo/e? Please.)
