Oh god not this A/B/O shit again.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-29 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Its just a way of legitimizing rape-culture. Oh he was an Omega, so biologically he needed to have sex he didn't really want. Oh he was an Alpha, he needed to have sex with someone and wasn't capable of taking no for an answer. Its kinda gross.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on how it's handled. I've read some where there was actually an emphasis on the omega having the right [and yes, the ability...even if their hormones made them really, really want to say "yes"] to say no and anything pressed after that was considered rape and illegal.

So it *can* be done, it just isn't very often.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I can't believe you are defending a concept dreamed up to make rape an acceptable thing. That is disgusting, you are disgusting.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
It's fiction, you dingbat.

No one is arguing that we should totally be okay with rape in real life because the completely fictional and biologically impossible ABO tropes exist in real life.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
It is fiction designed to normalize the concept of rape in the social mindset. Once you start rationalizing it there, it seems so much easier in real life. Do it with fictional characters, then in RPF, then.... Anything that justifies rape in fiction is something that makes it easier to justify in real life.

TW for rape for this whole discussion BTW

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
It is designed to imagine a world where the basic biological nature of sex is different. That's a very different thing.

All the rest of it... all I can say is "No." You're just wrong. Nobody is going to argue on the basis A/B/O fic that non-consensual sex is acceptable in the real world. No one is going to mistake an A/B/O world for the real world. They're fundamentally different things. And it's certainly not the intent of the people making it to do that. A/B/O fic is not the result of some massive conspiracy.

Re: TW for rape for this whole discussion BTW

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Just because you keep saying it is fictional does not excuse its use as a way to normalize rape culture. If you support the fic, even with the attempted justification of it being fiction or only reading the "good" ones, you are still endorsing a vehicle for rape-normalization. You are supporting rape by default.

Re: TW for rape for this whole discussion BTW

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
do you have any argument for why it's rape-normalization, besides just repeating that it definitely isn't

here's my argument for why it's not: people who write it are not trying to do that and there is a massive gap between the A/B/O world and the real world

Re: TW for rape for this whole discussion BTW

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah and there is such a massive gap between guys who enjoy pedo porn and actual pedos. If you are into justifying rape through contrived worldviews, then you are halfway to justifying it for real.

...Wow, congrats. You just called a rape survivor [and someone who actively works to increase awareness about rape/rape culture] a horrible horrible person who supports rape!...because they pointed out that fiction=/= reality and that some fics take that particular idea in a way that doesn't turn it into rape.

And if people rape "by default", then all the fangirls who write and read A/B/O crap will grow real-life knot-dicks and go out and rape their boyfriends until said boys are pregnant with litters of adorable little ass-babies.

Uh-huh. Oh, tell us more, oh wise one.

actually I'd argue that it's fiction designed to cater to fantasies of a large bloc of straight female slashers who want something to fap to

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
...Wow,way to miss the point. Also, fiction =/= reality so being okay with something in fiction =/= being okay with it in real life.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Whoever came up with this shit did not do so to "make rape an acceptable thing". They dreamed it up while wanking away and then wrote out their weird fucking kink to titillate others.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
it's pretty explicitly a fictional concept for people to experiment with those concepts in fanfiction through an absurd fictional world, in order to distance it from anything approaching reality

Not gonna lie, omegaverse anything typically creeps me out a lot. The usual fandom stereotyping (big strong manly man! with ~delicate waif manchild~) is kicked into overdrive, and issues of gender and consent are... not really done well. But it's pretty clearly rule of porn to me. It's about the appeal of a visceral, animalistic sexuality, where the omega is so irresistible that the alpha simply can't hold back and ravishes them. The sensual aspects, like pheromones and scenting and knotting, tie in there as well. There's also an element of losing inhibitions. It's basically a flashier version of sex pollen.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
From what little I know of the A-B-O (I don't read it), "flashier version of sex pollen" sounds like a apt definition.

[personal profile] littlestbirds 2014-05-30 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
nah, sex pollen is straight forward. it's not consensual, but they fuck anyway.
a/b/o is like if a bunch of sexist romance/porn tropes were legitimized by biology in a world where women are (often) erased. I understand intellectually why people like it, but I prefer the straightforward rape fantasy...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Still kinda sex pollen-y, except the sex pollen is the hormones these fictional bodies churn out.

What I wonder is, if someone created a totally alien race, with alien appearance, alien number of limbs, alien genitals, etc., and then slapped A/B/O on there, if the arguments against would be the same or different, of if A/B/O would suddenly become acceptable original fic.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
It actually is kind of split - a lot of them do fairly interesting explorations of gender and consent (well away from the mine-field of trying to mess with the "real" thing), and a lot of them do the trope-heavy porn. Some of them do both to interesting effect.

It's like one of the few things in fanfic I actively avoid.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I avoid the fic, but I like watching people argue about it.

I've always been curious about the fic, but I'm not a huge slash person, so... yeah.

I won't lie, I'll read it if the emphasis is on the world building, and not the sex.

...Of course, this rarely happens, hence I rarely read A/B/O (or dom/sub).
