Is it really? If I've had a few bad experiences with black men, would I then be justified in, say, choosing not to hire a black candidate to work for my business despite him being fully qualified? Or voice the opinion that I, personally, just can't trust black men. If you knew me personally and were aware of my feelings, would you really be "okay" with it?

If you're walking down the street than you have every right to cross it if you are feeling uncomfortable. Crossing the street=/=giving someone a job

Hiring a person means I'd have to work with him everyday, so if my personal reasons of feeling uncomfortable justify me avoiding him, I must be justified in not hiring him... supposedly.

Honestly, does anyone actually think this issue boils down to, "Am I wrong to cross the street if I feel uncomfortable?" Don't you think the juxtaposition of "crossing the street" and "institutionalized financial inequality" is kind of ridiculous? Basically, "it's okay if it's personal" is a gross simplification that would only work if we were, in fact, just talking about crossing the street and assumed that no other life situation could possibly create similar feelings of discomfort.

Depends, is the black man also Irish? I wouldn't trust an Irishman. I'd let the blacks in the building, but not Irish or dogs.

I know, fellow writer to this electronic community, I too, hate the Irish, but more so those Catholics. Can you ever imagine one of those people becoming president of the United States?

/because history jokes are funny, right?
/I imagine this being read/funnier with a stereotypical Captain Kirk/William Shatner impression

What if it's a black Catholic Irishman??

Quadruple whammy? Or do they all cancel each other out?

Whether or not you'd be justified, people do that kind of thing all the time anyway. People tend to hire who they like the most, not who's the most qualified, and so long as they aren't too extreme about it (couple of least-offensive tokens here and there to throw off the scent), nobody pays it any mind.

I don't disagree that it happens all the time, but I wouldn't say that nobody pays it any mind. Certainly the person being discriminated against, at least, would take issue if they were aware it was happening. If presented with the hypothetical, most people wouldn't be so willing to say that discriminatory hiring practices are just hunky dory.

In any case, the examples go on and on. Should I have the right to petition for a change of seats on an airplane if I feel uncomfortable having to spend 12 hours sitting next to someone? Should my HR rep be "okay" with my request to transfer because I can't be in the same department as a certain person?
