Re: The Changing Thoughts/Attitudes of F!S

About two years ago there was a ton more American bashing. Every week there seemed to be a secret that whined how it was not fair that Americans have so many television shows and movies aimed at them. (They were talking about American made shows for Americans.) How Hollywood should make shows about other countries in other languages outside of English aimed at smaller non-American countries just because. Or the secret was about how there were too many Americans in the secret maker's fandom for their liking. Never mind the places they named where Americans hung out were American created websites like tumblr.

I wonder what ever happened to those secret makers.

USian wank, though.

USian wank isn't sparked by people hating on people from the United States, it's sparked by people from the United States getting angry at the basic concept of the word USians

(being completely neutral in my language here obv, don't want to tip the scales)

Oh, boy. That name.

The logic behind the name that some people had did not make sense.

Non-American F!Ser: Americans shouldn't call themselves "Americans" because there is a North and South American. South Americans are Americans too! You should call yourself "USAsians."
American F!S: But that doesn't make any sense. Americans denote a citizen of the country of the USA. If you are from North or South America, you use the terms "North American" and "South American" to denote being from those continents.
Non-American F!Ser: Well, I'm from Columbia. I should have the right to call myself American. It's not fair that Americans claim the name all to themselves. It's American-centric.
American F!S: Yeah, and you call yourselves "Latin" and claim it as your own despite Romans never stepping a single foot in the Western Hemisphere.
Non-American F!Ser: We don't call ourselves that. We call ourselves by our individual countries. Only Americans group us together.
American F!Ser: But you are grouping yourselves together by wanting the right to call yourselves "American."
Non-American F!Ser: We have a right to the name.
American F!ser: But you just said you don't group yourselves. Hence, the no "Latin" thing.
Non-American F!Ser: We don't.
American F!Ser: But you just said...and...Latin...group. Oh, screw it. You are just trolling now, aren't you.
Non-American F!Ser: That's very American centric of you to say.
American F!Ser: (dead stare)

Sometimes those Americans weren't. Remember when F!S used to be flooded with "enlightened" Americans. Americans who used to argue such things like that the Japanese couldn't be racist toward whites in their own country because, according to them, the Japanese were not as powerful as Westerners. Never mind that Japan has one of the largest economies on the planet. Dwarfing most European countries. Nope. They saw a country full of "POCs" and automatically thought, "They are lesser than whites" in terms of power. In essence, they were being really racists in trying to not be racist.

I particularly liked the "Jackson" comparison, though I can't seem to find it now.

What was the "Jackson" comparison?

Basically, that the US is like a guy named "Jackson" getting told by a bunch of people with the last name Jackson that he can't use Jackson anymore, even though it was the name he was born with, because they're all "Jacksons" too (but go by their first names, usually). All of his friends know him as Jackson, and he doesn't have another name to go by. Worse, instead of Jackson, those people have themselves renamed him "Mr." - which isn't even a name.

Hah! That's fantastic.

Re: The Changing Thoughts/Attitudes of F!S ******

America has pulled its cultural horns in a bit since then. Its been chastened by the cumulative military failures in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the abortive attempt at getting a military expedition to Syria, the US has been less strident in its support for Israel, Its economy is still in the crapper so it isn't buying up as much or the rest of the world, its spy system has taken knocks after Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden's heroic actions, and its sphere of influence is shrinking, as evidenced by the way Russia has basically totally discounted US interference in Europe (helped by the virtual collapse of the EU and UK).

The US just isn't as globally threatening and culturally imperialistic anymore and people don't have the same feeling of oppression from it nor the need to fight back. As America becomes less and less capable of dominating and controlling the media, the grassroots resistance becomes less strident.

Plus all the recent shows out of the states have been shit and Doctor Who has been British and awesome.

Agreed. Television really has never been better. The variety out there is amazing. It used to be all cop shows, doctor shows, lawyer show,s daytime talk shows, night time talk shows, soaps and the news. That was just about it. Now, if you have hankering for something, there is probably an American produced show of it.

For a given definition of "better." It's still television.

Re: The Changing Thoughts/Attitudes of F!S ******

[personal profile] mekkio 2014-05-30 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, come on. It's better in that it is attracting some real talent. It used to be television was this thing and movies are this thing with television being a lower form. You had TV actors and you movie actors. And you had TV directors/producers and movie directors/producers. But in the last couple of years, that has been all but erased. A-List actors like Halle Berry and Matthew Mcconaughey are popping up on television without a worry that they may ruin their movie careers. Well known directors are like Guillermo del Toro and David Fincher are doing shows (though Fincher's is on netflix. But I still count it as a television show since it is serial.)

It's a free for all now. People are writing for both television and movies.

There's still American bashing whenever there's race wank. If you want to win a race debate, just accuse the other of being American, because what Americans think they know about race is US-centric and therefore wrong.

Unless you happen to get into the "all Europeans are racist" wank, which I've also seen on occasion.
