The Changing Thoughts/Attitudes of F!S

(Anonymous) 2014-05-29 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry if that title is a little vague. What I wanted to ask was how the thoughts, opinions, and attitudes on F!S have changed since its creation. I guess to elaborate further, I've been looking up previous F!S people from the recent threads about what happened to certain people or anons, and from the stuff I've been seeing that have come before 2013, it's almost like I'm in a completely different F!S than I've known (which is since January of this year) in terms of reactions and prevailing thoughts. I've seen named users from those times that still post here, and hopefully they can shed some insight on it.

I know this sounds a bit hard to answer, but this has just been eating me up since I started looking.

two years ago i thought there was no way f!s could get any more negative and cynical.

turns out i was wrong!

ugly!anons, "troll!" circlejerks, tumblr bashing... thanks for keeping me entertained, f!s. i'll drink to that!

I always think it's a surprisingly friendly and supportive place. I always expect trolls to eviscerate you for some little thing.

But Tumblr is a cesspool.

Hi, anon - but I've been hanging around since...oh about a year after F!S started up. [I'm just really shy, okay?]

Anyways, truth is there have been a lot of changes [with occasional changes back], and a lot of users have come and gone. So it'd probably just be easier to go back through old posts and read the larger threads if you really want to get an idea of what changed/when.

Lots of things change all the time. I remember when we changed from free for all comments to labeled numbers by FScom. That was funny because so many people were against it.

I also remember the anons who would follow users around and harass them. Less funny.

There are still anons who do that. We've just learned to mock them.

I know there has been way too much thread freezing, and far too much over-sensitivity recently. We used to be able to talk and joke about anything, and anyone who was too fragile or too much of an SJW was invited to get the fuck out of the thread. Now it seems they've taken over and things are always taken far too seriously.

When I first started posting here it was kind of a major SJW nest. I remember once I got shit on for offering support to a rape survivor because the rape survivor's views didn't match that of the anon who was shitting on me.

Now we glare people like radfem!anon out of the room.

I feel like it's gotten a lot better, because there was a time when the SJW infestation was really bad. They moved on the greener pastures, though.

Sadly this was also the time when there were moore secrets (and more wank) which I both sort of miss.

I for one am glad there's less wank. It's not as interesting/funny/free-for-all, so it's not really worth investing the time which I have less of these days.

The SJWs left and joy spread across the land. The users rejoiced.

To be honest? I don't think the SJWs left. I think they got smart and pop on from time to time. Its not nearly as bad as it used to be.

I think my favorite SJW was curseangel. She ended up being racist in her reasonings for why Kirk/Spock was superior and should be canon instead of Spock/Uhura. And claiming I was a homophobe, despite the fact that I like the pair (old school tho) and I was a huge Kirk/Bones shipper.

We were getting fairly tight-knit around 2010/early 2011, too. I stopped being a regular poster for most of 2011 and I notice that's when things started to change. And with the move to DW it was like starting from scratch all over again.

About two years ago there was a ton more American bashing. Every week there seemed to be a secret that whined how it was not fair that Americans have so many television shows and movies aimed at them. (They were talking about American made shows for Americans.) How Hollywood should make shows about other countries in other languages outside of English aimed at smaller non-American countries just because. Or the secret was about how there were too many Americans in the secret maker's fandom for their liking. Never mind the places they named where Americans hung out were American created websites like tumblr.

I wonder what ever happened to those secret makers.

Re: The Changing Thoughts/Attitudes of F!S ******

America has pulled its cultural horns in a bit since then. Its been chastened by the cumulative military failures in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the abortive attempt at getting a military expedition to Syria, the US has been less strident in its support for Israel, Its economy is still in the crapper so it isn't buying up as much or the rest of the world, its spy system has taken knocks after Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden's heroic actions, and its sphere of influence is shrinking, as evidenced by the way Russia has basically totally discounted US interference in Europe (helped by the virtual collapse of the EU and UK).

The US just isn't as globally threatening and culturally imperialistic anymore and people don't have the same feeling of oppression from it nor the need to fight back. As America becomes less and less capable of dominating and controlling the media, the grassroots resistance becomes less strident.

Plus all the recent shows out of the states have been shit and Doctor Who has been British and awesome.

I honestly don't know, but... (and this is going to sound entirely too serious to be talking about a secrets comm) things change. People change, constantly. So I think it's just the nature of things, that as long as places like this are going to be around, things are going to evolve.

There's no way to tell how many users (both named and otherwise) that were here prior 2013 are still here, and with new members the tone shifts, I think. Especially if you have a a lot of new members, though, again, I'm not so sure how many of us were here before 2013.

Fandom in general is much different than it was a decade ago, so I suppose it's normal and to be expected.

it doesn't feel to me like it's changed that much, especially in only a few months

it's a little different from the last year or so of its run on LJ, which is when I started following, but it's hard to put my finger on why. Not a whole lot different though.
