I am terrified of the idea of overpopulation, and want to help slow down population growth, but I just can't not help if it seems like someone is going to die. A stranger once thanked me for helping prevent his suicide. I have been the 'one person' that was there many times for two of my friends. I even saved a random kid from choking to death in a restaurant.

The fear of overpopulation makes these acts seem unjustified but if I let these people die it's evil. There is less guilt with helping people. It's messed up.

Overpopulation is honestly far less of a problem than you think it is - I mean, we already reached peak child back in 2011. Obviously, the population will still continue to grow as these children age, but it'll stabilise in the latter half of this century.

World fertility rates are only 2.5, with a continued downward trend. There is nothing that can be done to slow population growth at this point without ending up with some seriously skewed demographics and far too many dependants of the older variety. Please don't feel guilty about not letting people die!

Do you have any sources you can share? I've been wanting to read up on this more.

If you've not already watched it, though, Hans Rosling did a lovely documentary last year (available on youtube, although if you can find a higher-res version, it's well worth it for the graphics alone)

Stemming overpopulation is really a matter of people having fewer children than hoping random, already-living people die before old age.

The good news is people already are having fewer children - the global birth rate has declined and in some countries, it is below replacement rate. Other countries still have high birthrates, but they will most likely decline, too, given time. There are still a lot of children being born these days, but that's because there is such a large population of women of child-bearing age right now due to higher birth rates in the past.

Population density of New York City is 26,403 people/square mile. There are 7.046 billion people on this planet. At the density of New York, everyone on Earth could fit in 266,863.61 square miles. That's less than the size of the state of Texas.

Overpopulation concerns are kind of unnecessary, is what I'm saying.

it's not a space issue? I don't think overpopulation is a big threat either, but it was always a resources and sustainability issue.

Overpopulation is not at all a problem of space. It's a problem of growing enough food and generating enough energy and having enough water and having enough minerals and metals and all that kind of thing. Those are much more tricky problems than the space thing.

So you're feeling guilty for saving people because of overpopulation?

Uh. You might wanna talk to a therapist about this.

Pushing birth control and the responsible use of resources are much more effective at helping overpopulation than letting the people who are already here die. Refocus your concerns, anon.
