The whole "X character doesn't look [insert ethnicity] enough" statement never, ever ends well. Especially because people have different opinions on what it means to be "X enough".

That being said, I think Disney could do with a bit more character variation. It's like ever since they switched to 3D movies, they just seem so afraid to step away from their standard big-eyed, button-nosed protagonist archetype that they achieved in Tangled. I mean, they still had a a standard look back when they were doing hand-drawn animation, but I feel that they put more effort into different character designs back then.

I don't know, I'd say Pocahontas looks different from Belle looks different from Snow White looks different from Mulan, etc. Their 3D stuff is wicked similar and it's starting to look bleh to me.

Pocahontas was an Art Style Shift (probably to emphasize how much more serious it was supposed to be) Snow What was made by a then-fledgling in the art of feature length movies Disney at least forty years prior, Mulan is stylized to look different than the white princesses. Belle is really the only one who looks similar to the rest of the recent 'styles'.

You're not wrong, I just found picking their first movie and then picking their 28th and 21st and I'm just kind of throwing numbers out there was a little strange.

I didn't want to name all of the princesses, which I do think look different from each other. Sleeping Beauty doesn't look like Cinderella doesn't look like Ariel doesn't look like Jasmine doesn't look like Kuzco Tiana, etc

Yes, I agree. They did have more design variety. What I was trying to say was that even with that variation, you could still tell that it was visually a Disney film. I might not have expressed myself clearly. :x

I don't doubt that they could do the same thing with their 3D films but as I said, they seem so reluctant to stray from their formula.

If I have one big complaint about Disney's 3-D animation versus their 2-D stuff, it's that it feels to me like they're putting a lot less effort into everything than they are now. You look at, say, the Disney Renaissance and there's a lot of neat stuff Disney did: the art style shifts of Pocahontas and Mulan and Hercules, CAPS, Deep Canvas, etc. None of their 3-D films feel like they've really attempted any of that outside of maybe Tangled (I know quite a bit of effort was put into Rapunzel's hair). I kinda feel like Disney is trying so desperately to nip at the heels of Pixar and Dreamworks that they're not willing to go out on a limb and experiment the way they used to.

I think you hit the nail on the head there. Tangled was probably their first big 3D hit. Previous efforts like Chicken Little and Dinosaur, not so much. And yes, with Dreamworks and Pixar to compete with, it feels like they're too afraid to mess with something that turned out to be a success.

Unfortunately I think the position of no longer being the only game in town has really dragged down Disney's creative side. I know Mulan in particular is pretty well-regarded, but what a lot of people forget is that most of those films that did mess with the formula were not really box office smashes (Pocahontas broke a streak of Disney films outgrossing their immediate predecessors, Hercules was the first film of the Renaissance that failed to break the $100 million mark domestically). Disney might have been willing to risk that when Pixar was just getting started and this whole 3-D thing was new, but now with so much more competition I think Disney's too afraid to step outside the comfortable middle ground they've found themselves in. (Heck, I think most of the animation studios now, even Pixar, are succumbing to this to various extents. For me the main standout right now as being least effected is probably Laika, the studio behind Coraline and Paranorman.)

It's so true! I agree that Pixar might be stagnating a little bit as well. Animation is in a weird place right now, man.
