Hah! I knew that someone was going to say that. I just knew it. I wonder if people who are trying to be "SJW enlightened" realize how racist they are. They want a stereotype not a character.


And I bet if you asked them,

"And how should he look?"

They'd respond, "You know, Asian."

"And how do Asians look like?"

"You know, like Chinese and Japanese."

"And how do Japanese look like?"

"You know,....ahhhh..."

And before you know it, you have made them admit that what they want is indeed a racist caricature.

I saw the teaser on the big screen in front of Maleficent today, it's clear as day he's not white.

It's interesting, but as an Asian person, I would say that they could actually make him look more "Asian" without him becoming a caricature.
The only reason for this is that most people watching this movie will just assume he's white. But this is just one opinion

Is it really that much of an insult to not look like a white person? He looks like Hiccup with black hair. They could have made him look more japanese without turning him into a WWII propaganda poster. You know? It can be done.

Oh gosh, he looks so much like my brother when we were younger! We're half German and half Han-Chinese, and we have that same in between not-quite-yellow-not-quite-olive skin undertone.

Oh man this pleases me so much, I don't even tend to think of a chance at representation seeing as how we're the wrong kind of mix. :D

Honestly though, he's dead on ringer for this Okinawan kid I knew back in middle school.

This is just as ridiculous as some of the Korra white washing drama a couple years ago. Not to mention that the whole Face of the Other thing that people quote for why anime characters are definitely not white by default... yeah.

I didn't know he was asian just from looking at him, however he could as well be. He looks like a girl from Wreck it Ralph, imho.

This is funny to me, because the first time I saw WiR, I figured that everyone from Sugar Rush was a chibi made 3D, i.e. Japanese. But, I guess not everyone saw it, so maybe I'm just overthinking things. |D

It's so ridiculous, especially since so many of the people trying this shit all have icons and other pictures of anime characters on their blogs who are all japanese but who dont look like your stereotypical depiction of an asian person. BH6 is being done in an anime aesthetic as well.

The whole "X character doesn't look [insert ethnicity] enough" statement never, ever ends well. Especially because people have different opinions on what it means to be "X enough".

That being said, I think Disney could do with a bit more character variation. It's like ever since they switched to 3D movies, they just seem so afraid to step away from their standard big-eyed, button-nosed protagonist archetype that they achieved in Tangled. I mean, they still had a a standard look back when they were doing hand-drawn animation, but I feel that they put more effort into different character designs back then.

I don't know, I'd say Pocahontas looks different from Belle looks different from Snow White looks different from Mulan, etc. Their 3D stuff is wicked similar and it's starting to look bleh to me.

If I have one big complaint about Disney's 3-D animation versus their 2-D stuff, it's that it feels to me like they're putting a lot less effort into everything than they are now. You look at, say, the Disney Renaissance and there's a lot of neat stuff Disney did: the art style shifts of Pocahontas and Mulan and Hercules, CAPS, Deep Canvas, etc. None of their 3-D films feel like they've really attempted any of that outside of maybe Tangled (I know quite a bit of effort was put into Rapunzel's hair). I kinda feel like Disney is trying so desperately to nip at the heels of Pixar and Dreamworks that they're not willing to go out on a limb and experiment the way they used to.

That said I understand why it can be an issue (people having a problem with him looking "too white", and people saying he doesn't look asian "enough").

I'm not buying his design because I feel like I've seen him before, and I can't remember where.

I think he looks cute. The style's supposed to resemble anime so I don't think his design is a problem. If people can't figure out he's at least half-japanese with a name like Hiro Hamada then they're idiots.

I just wish that western media realized there are more japanese names than Hiro. babynames.com is right there, people.

Are people really complaining about this? I feel it would be MORE problematic if they drastically altered their teacup-eye animation style (regardless of whether you like that in the first place) just for one character to give him an epicanthic fold.

I work around native Japanese and he could totally pass for a child version of one of the new interns in the office. So yeah, I'd say he looks pretty Japanese to me.
