I dunno, you change the skin color and the eyes too much, you run the risk of sliding into caricature territory, but he really does look like Generic White Character here. Maybe it's time to recognize the rest of Asia? Like the brown side?

A lamentation that Asian characters are always Chinese or Japanese? I don't know the canon so I didn't know his background, didn't see any reason he couldn't have been some other kind of Asian from the start.

He's Japanese because the comic book he's from was set in Japan. In fact, all the characters in the comic and looks like the movie will be of Japanese heritage save for one who will be of Ainu heritage.

Because the source material is basically a huge homage to Japanese hero culture?

okay, so? hiro isn't dark skinned and neither was his comic equivalent.

But this character is supposed to be of Japanese heritage. (His name is Hiro Hamada.) Japanese are not exactly darker like say Filipinos or Cambodians.

So how about we have some Filipinos and Cambodians and Malaysians and Rajasthanis for a damn change. Oh, right, we're too brown and not cool.

No, you don't have the pop culture heritage of building fighting robots like Japan does. And this is what this character is about. He is a kid Tony Stark character that is also a homage to the Mecha culture of Japan.

*shrug* Don't know the canon, so he's got legit reason to be yet another Japanese character, fine. But it still sucks that animators don't know how to make Other Races really look like Other Races.

If you don't know the canon, why are you arguing with people who do?

White folk do have this tendency to NOT recognize lower levels of melanin in people's skin, I notice. Always thinking it's just a tan, they're really white under it, until it approaches real cocoa and chocolate levels and can't be denied anymore.

yes true! sorry, I was just annoyed by the implication that giving the character darker skin would make him look less white and more asian.
