It's interesting, but as an Asian person, I would say that they could actually make him look more "Asian" without him becoming a caricature.
The only reason for this is that most people watching this movie will just assume he's white. But this is just one opinion

(Anonymous) 2014-05-30 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
And how would you make him look more "Asian?"

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
DA
I dunno, you change the skin color and the eyes too much, you run the risk of sliding into caricature territory, but he really does look like Generic White Character here. Maybe it's time to recognize the rest of Asia? Like the brown side?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
he's japanese and they're generally pale? what is this comment.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
A lamentation that Asian characters are always Chinese or Japanese? I don't know the canon so I didn't know his background, didn't see any reason he couldn't have been some other kind of Asian from the start.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
He's Japanese because the comic book he's from was set in Japan. In fact, all the characters in the comic and looks like the movie will be of Japanese heritage save for one who will be of Ainu heritage.

Because the source material is basically a huge homage to Japanese hero culture?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
...There are brown Japanese people.

But this character is supposed to be of Japanese heritage. (His name is Hiro Hamada.) Japanese are not exactly darker like say Filipinos or Cambodians.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
So how about we have some Filipinos and Cambodians and Malaysians and Rajasthanis for a damn change. Oh, right, we're too brown and not cool.

If you gave him darker skin he'd just look like a darker skinned white kid you moron

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
He looks like a white now, so what's your point?
White folk do have this tendency to NOT recognize lower levels of melanin in people's skin, I notice. Always thinking it's just a tan, they're really white under it, until it approaches real cocoa and chocolate levels and can't be denied anymore.

I'm Asian too, and I agree. The character looks way more Caucasian than Asian to me, or like he's half. I kind of feel like people in this thread are implying that non-Caucasian features are caricature-like, which isn't true. His eyes could maybe be more almond shaped?

Looking again, maybe it's the eyebrows and the lower half of the face? I don't know, but that kids just doesn't look that Asian to me. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
How do Asians look to you? Speaking as an Asian (who is often mistaken for white, when in the US), I am really interested in what your answer would be!

To me, a Japanese name and black hair seems sufficient, but maybe YOU think all Asians have slanted eyes even in animated movies where eyes are systematically rounded and magnified for all young characters. But why would you feel he is being white washed? Or are you saying that all Asian have bushy eyebrows?

I never noticed Asians or any other race for that matter to have any particular difference when it comes to eyebrows or chins (noses, hair and skin color may, and I notice you carefully avoid mentioning either of these contentious traits), but not chins or eyebrows? Not really: I mean, I only lived in three different continents, but what do I know, right?

Because if that is the case, thank you so much for your condescension and please get out of my corner, I don't want someone like you in it. If not, please clarify your point, maybe I misunderstood you?

Since you sound quite knowledgeable on racial physical characteristics and not at all prejudiced, please do speak up, I am all agog! :D

Name and hair color would do it for me too, but seriously, given that pic with no context whatsoever, he really does look like a generic white-default male character.

You do realize that you are being a tad condescending yourself? Seriously, what's wrong with having a character that doesn't look Caucasian in a Disney movie? Sure you can pass as white, and maybe this character can too (lol), but why have an Asian character designed this way? By the ways, bitching about "slanted" eyes really doesn't help your point.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
What is this comment? Why do you keep talking about eyebrows? Do you mean the brow ridge? Did you really just write that sentence about "a Japanese name and black hair would be sufficient"?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
This artist did a nice little guide to the most basic identifiers of ethnicity in the most non-caricatured way possible (that's just the first chart which deals with Asia, but there are other charts that deal with the variations in Europe and Africa as well). Obviously no one group "all look alike." But there are usually physical traits that are more pronounced or less pronounced from one ethnicity to another, on a grander scale (ie: not everyone from northeast Africa has very dark skin, but it's more common there than not. Or the specifics--people from the British Isles are more likely to have a particularly shaped nose than people from the Nordic countries).

There's something uncomfortable with the attitude that any physical trait that could suggest a character isn't white might be read as caricature, because it sort of implies that white is "normal" and everything else isn't. People look different. Many of those differences are individual, but some of them are racial. There's more to making a character look Asian than slightly slanted eyes, and it seems like maybe they could've done that.

Or maybe in the movie context it'll be obvious. I dunno.

Yes, this is what I'm talking about. Maybe his eyes could be a bit more almond shaped? Many Asian people have eyes like this including me. This is a lot different from having eyes being depicted as slanted lines. Because looking at this character, I would never have guessed that he was supposed to be Asian.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt
I also dislike the slanted eyes depiction, because Asian eyes can be even larger than Caucasian eyes, but the shape of Asian eyes is still different from Caucasian ones. I honestly would say that I don't look like that kid.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe the need to stop focusing on the palpebral fissures so much and work on how they draw the eyelid? I dunno, I'm no artist, just seems to me people get caught up in the 'almond shaped eyes' bit and lose sight of the fact that it's the lids that really make them look that way.

"Asian" isn't one monolithic ethnicity, though. I think that's part of the issue. I mean, say he doesn't look Japanese enough or something, but don't imply that all people of Asian decent look alike.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
That's true, but no one is arguing that "Asian" is one monolithic ethnicity, so why even bother bringing that up? This is more about having an Asian character in a Disney movie that kind of looks Caucasian. I mean, I don't have a problem with the character, but I can see why other people would.
