Wow, what a tool. I keep hearing about the Nostalgia Critic and my first exposure to him ripping apart Sailor Moon in a completely idiotic manner doesn't do much for my opinion of him. I mean, fucking seriously, man, just because you're only capable of looking at Sailor Moon from the perspective of your boner doesn't mean it was ever supposed to be fanservice - it's for girls who want to be pretty and kick ass at the same time, saying that femininity is not inherently a weakness, but can be a strength. You can do a sparkly ballerina dance and make the bad guys explode and still be flawed and normal, pure power fantasy for a little girl. But no, forget that, go on and on about consent laws, that's not male-gazing the entire show at all.

At the very end, it seemed like he was kind approaching understanding what the appeal was about - for example, that Usagi was a realistic, grounded character instead of the empty beauty that's usually tossed at girls for our heroes - but I can't really forgive him for that five minutes of going "SHE'S FOURTEEEEEEEN MAH POOR MISLED DICK". Jesus.

Yes, I'm incredibly, irrationally defensive of my sweet baby Sailor Moon I will fight everyone for that show dude can go to hell.

Late to the party, but I want to strengthen your point - I think that he (and a lot of people) aren't aware that legs seem to be sexualized really differently in Japan and Korea than they are in the States.
Like, girls here will wear teeny tiny skirts as office wear and stuff, but they keep their chest and torso more covered up. I think that people don't get that the mini skirts are not (necessarily) meant to be sexualization.
(not saying they CAN'T be, of course, but there are different perceptions here)

I didn't realize that! Yeah, I've noticed in anime that there's short skirts and super long legs everywhere, but full coverage on the chest and belly (and usually a diminutive bust). Whether or not it's supposed to tantalizing seems to vary according to the anime (some shows make a kink of the tease), but short skirts aren't automatically sexualization, and anyone who actually watches the stuff regularly can tell the difference.

Exactly!

I notice it because I'm living in Korea now, and I was talking to an American friend who works here, and she was wearing this new dress of hers that she commented was a lot shorter than she felt appropriate wearing like to meetings and stuff, but that here showing leg (admittedly, usually with some kind of tights, even if only skin-toned) is generally considered fine, whereas showing cleavage is super no-no. Shoulder is also seen as kind of inappropriate.

Like you say, it takes about .3 seconds for anybody who knows anime to register if it's going to be fanservicey or not, usually.
