Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence

And yet, some people do, and it's their choice to do so.

You say elsewhere that it will just be used against them. Maybe so.

But if I'm being attacked by a dude twice my size, and I have no weapon, nothing I will do will give me the advantage anyway. With a weapon, maybe it will help, maybe not, but it's a damn sight better than bare hands.

(And yes, I could learn self defense. I used to know some. Maybe I'll learn it again. But there's no guarantee that shit works; you don't know anything about the other person. Maybe they know some. Maybe they're good at ignoring pain. Maybe I'll forget all the motions. I don't have a gun, but I have a pocket knife, and even though I've only ever used it for opening boxes and shit like that, once or twice it has given me comfort in situations where I wasn't comfortable being alone at night.)

Weapons is worse than barehands because you're still barehanded, they just have a weapon now.

Why the hell does everyone just assume an attacker is magically able to take away a weapon without getting shot or stabbed?

because 99 times out of 100, they will. They are going to be hopped up on, if not actual narcotics, anticipation and nerves; swimming in soup of hormones and neurotransmitters all dedicated to minimizing pain and maximizing reactions. By the time your cut or bullet registers, assuming you can get the weapon out and used in time (which you probably can't), they are already on top of you and halfway through the deed (robbery, rape, or that horrify combi of the two), and your body will be pumping out terror hormones which will screw up your reactions as well as futzing your memory so chances are you'll have forgotten you even have a weapon.

Chances are, that your attacker will have done this before. If they are an adult they almost certainly have done this before, since most rape/robbers start learning this in their early teenage years, they'll know what to expect better than you do. They have muscle memory and higher pain tolerance on their side.

Wow. You're one of those sad critters that's one third informed, and two thirds defeatist.

By your reasoning, responsibly taught and meant-to-be-preventative self-defense methods are a total waste of time.

So how come they've saved so many lives? Mine included?

Also, anyone who knows that self-defense (both unarmed and armed) actually works, also knows that you can't just go on a 5-hour course and expect it to last the rest of your life. You keep at it.

Good self-defense courses (both unarmed and armed) deliberately focus on muscle memory; good self-defense instructors insist that you should come to class at least once a week *forever* (twice a week is better).

But the bottom line is, if everyone suddenly took on your mentality, the unnatural death-rate in just about every country would noticeably spike.

Or that attackers are automatically more versed in weaponry than the one carrying it? I had a guy forcing himself on me and trying to pull me into an alley that dropped everything and fucking ran when he saw that I had a gun. It wasn't even loaded. Attackers can very well be rash and cowardly and will flee at the first sign of their victim even slightly being able to catch the upper hand on them.

Fuck everyone in here all "don't bother, you're probs gonna get raped anyway and you'll only hurt yourself" like no literally come over here and eat my shit.

Based on reports filed of gun theft, the statement that they saw the gun and ran away is vastly more improbable than they saw the gun then smashed you in the face with a brick and stole the gun along with the rest of your things.

Except it doesn't matter bc if we're both barehanded, I'm going to lose anyway.

And again: being aware of the risks and taking them is the choice that's being made, here.

Right, except now a weapons in play, the situation has escalated, and someone is significantly more likely to get very badly hurt or killed, and it's unlikely to be them.

Like I get it, it sucks but that's the way the cookie crumbles. Running, screaming and shouting is far more likely to lead to a better outcome, even if it isn't perfect and you know anecdotes where it didn't work.
