Carrying weapons for self defence is such an unbelieveably terrible idea, jesus christ.

Really?

I guess we should just lie back and think of England?

No.

You should run, and if impossible fight, but unless you're highly trained (as in uniform service experience, not a couple self defences courses or some nonsense like that) chances are overwhelmingly in favour that a weapons going to get used on you.

And the second that weapon comes into play, everything has suddenly escalated massivley.

I am a small-framed woman with a bad back. The wrong move, on the wrong day, puts me on the ground writhing in agony. You seriously think I can outrun a man twice my size? What the hell planet do you live on?

The alternate scenario is that I pull the gun, and he either leaves and looks for easier prey, or I pull the trigger when he keeps coming. And, yes, I have a concealed carry permit.

What scenario in the world do you think is going to have you get the drop on a predatory man, outdrawing him at serious distance (if he's in conversation distance you won't be able to draw before he gets to you)?

Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence

I have two words for you (which will probably piss you off, but oh well):

Trayvon Martin.

Had Zimmerman down and was pummeling the shit out of him... and died for his trouble because Zimmerman was armed. Say what you like about the situation, the outcome was that the guy on the ground killed the guy on top.

I don't need to "get the drop on him." I just need to be in a position to be able to get to my weapon.

Otherwise I guess I could just, you know, piss on myself like one ridiculous suggestion I saw. Or lie back and think of England and hope he doesn't cut my throat for me.

No you moron. But guess what, pepper spray, a taser, and those little bunny ear things? Going to do jack shit.

For one, the taser and bunny ears need your attacker to be very close. The pepper spray will most likely gas both of you. You may be able to use them to defend yourself but you are more likely to just piss your attacker off while providing them with a weapon. Also, if you are suddently attacked by some stranger in an alley (very unlikely) the chances of you not freezing up/panicking are slim without training.

Learn some actual self defense.

...bunny ears?

Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
God yes. Every time I read this internet-badass "I'm always carrying a knife so come at me, rapists, I'm gonna cut you up!" bullshit I keep thinking "Dear lord, darling you probably don't even know which side of the knife to hold". Being the first to draw a weapon in a fight/drawing a weapon at all is a bad, bad idea if you don't know exactly how to use it and even then it's risky.

Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, the nightmare scenario is that I end up in a situation where I actually need a weapon. "Come at me, rapists" is stupid no matter what you're armed with.

And yet, some people do, and it's their choice to do so.

You say elsewhere that it will just be used against them. Maybe so.

But if I'm being attacked by a dude twice my size, and I have no weapon, nothing I will do will give me the advantage anyway. With a weapon, maybe it will help, maybe not, but it's a damn sight better than bare hands.

(And yes, I could learn self defense. I used to know some. Maybe I'll learn it again. But there's no guarantee that shit works; you don't know anything about the other person. Maybe they know some. Maybe they're good at ignoring pain. Maybe I'll forget all the motions. I don't have a gun, but I have a pocket knife, and even though I've only ever used it for opening boxes and shit like that, once or twice it has given me comfort in situations where I wasn't comfortable being alone at night.)

Weapons is worse than barehands because you're still barehanded, they just have a weapon now.

Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Why the hell does everyone just assume an attacker is magically able to take away a weapon without getting shot or stabbed?

Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
because 99 times out of 100, they will. They are going to be hopped up on, if not actual narcotics, anticipation and nerves; swimming in soup of hormones and neurotransmitters all dedicated to minimizing pain and maximizing reactions. By the time your cut or bullet registers, assuming you can get the weapon out and used in time (which you probably can't), they are already on top of you and halfway through the deed (robbery, rape, or that horrify combi of the two), and your body will be pumping out terror hormones which will screw up your reactions as well as futzing your memory so chances are you'll have forgotten you even have a weapon.

Chances are, that your attacker will have done this before. If they are an adult they almost certainly have done this before, since most rape/robbers start learning this in their early teenage years, they'll know what to expect better than you do. They have muscle memory and higher pain tolerance on their side.

Or that attackers are automatically more versed in weaponry than the one carrying it? I had a guy forcing himself on me and trying to pull me into an alley that dropped everything and fucking ran when he saw that I had a gun. It wasn't even loaded. Attackers can very well be rash and cowardly and will flee at the first sign of their victim even slightly being able to catch the upper hand on them.

Fuck everyone in here all "don't bother, you're probs gonna get raped anyway and you'll only hurt yourself" like no literally come over here and eat my shit.

Except it doesn't matter bc if we're both barehanded, I'm going to lose anyway.

And again: being aware of the risks and taking them is the choice that's being made, here.

Right, except now a weapons in play, the situation has escalated, and someone is significantly more likely to get very badly hurt or killed, and it's unlikely to be them.

Like I get it, it sucks but that's the way the cookie crumbles. Running, screaming and shouting is far more likely to lead to a better outcome, even if it isn't perfect and you know anecdotes where it didn't work.

Ah, the wonders of the post-Internet society

[personal profile] feotakahari 2014-06-01 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I used to argue a lot with a scary hardcore Christian who was also a Platonist and a monarchist. He once tried to convince me that gay men shouldn't be allowed to adopt children because bottle-fed babies have lower IQs on average than breast-fed babies. When I questioned the validity of the study he was citing, he said something that's always stuck with me. "You are entitled to your own opinions, but you're not entitled to your own facts."

That's one of the most untrue things you can say these days.

Do guns save lives? Will guns just get you killed? Here are my statistics proving one thing! Here are my statistics proving the other! No, your statistics are biased! No, your statistics have a sampling error! No, you! No, you!

I think you can find the actual truth on at least some of these. (I found my answers on global warming when I noticed that professional climatologists were saying one thing, and the folks who were saying the opposite were geologists and botanists and such.) But good luck trying to prove that to anyone who doesn't already share your views. Your statistics can be your foundation, but they can just as easily be your wall--or perhaps your dam, preventing the flow of any information contradictory to what you want to believe.

(And no, I'm not taking a side in this stupid argument. I don't know enough about which stats are credible.)
