Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence
And you pretty much do need to get the drop on them, because they will have complete control of the situation, and significantly more experience of things like "getting punched in the head and being in a roll around" then you. I mean fights just don't work in the way you seem to think they do.
The suggestion would be, scream and shout and draw as much attention as possible, and realise that you cannot ever prepare to be 100% safe, and it's a trade off of risks.
Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence
(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)And it's my tradeoff to make.
And I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence
We know how likely it is to help you, compared to how likely it is to help you, and the odds are unbelieveably stacked against you.
Possessing it puts it into play.
Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence
(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)I think I'd rather take advice from my husband, who actually loves me and cares about my well-being, than some stranger on the internet from a country where the cops don't even carry guns (judging from your spelling).
Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence
What's relevant is the fact that trained professionals will give the exact same advice, what you're doing is a terrible idea, and is significantly more likely to hurt you then to help you. This is non-negotiable.
Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence
(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)Oh, bullshit, "non-negotiable." Trained professionals in your country, maybe. Cops on the street in mine? Different story. My brother-in-law is a cop. He loves concealed-carry holders. So do most cops: http://thearmsguide.com/4248/concealed-carry-what-do-police-think/
Hell, I got pulled over a few weeks ago for doing 67 in a 50. I handed over my license and my concealed-carry permit and said "I have a CC permit, but I'm not carrying today." He thanked me for telling him that and let me off two minutes later with a warning. It was the shortest traffic stop I've ever had.
Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence
And I'm talking about trained educated proffesionals, not some random ass swat officers or beat cops in a country which lionises the lone gun slinging vigilante.
Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence
(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)And I'm not "regurgitating NRA slogans," you said yourself that they're "a radio call away." Just how long does that take in your world, sunshine? Seconds, or minutes?
I would rather live in a country that lionizes the lone gunman vigilante where I have the right to self-defense than a country that jails people for defending themselves instead of waiting for the cops to show up, perhaps too late to do anything but process the body and the crime scene.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)As for the "I have a gun, but not carrying today": Well you ever hear a grandmother say "that's nice dear" to a grandkid who is prattling on about pooing in the big girl potty? The' cop's "thank's for telling me" is just a cop's way of saying "that's nice dear, now pull your panties up and go away".

Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence
(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)Welcome to the wonderful world of Sales, Marketing, and PR. Connection to reality: optional.
You would leave me completely defenseless No, it would merely take away the illusion of defense. You already are, for all practical purposes, defenseless. What you have is the dangerous illusion that you aren't, which may give you undue confidence and lead you into dangerous situations that you would otherwise avoid. Guns don't kill people, a false sense of security kills people.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 01:42 am (UTC)(link)Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence
"Possessing it puts it into play."
I will never argue against that. I will in several instances back what you have to say. For instance: inexperienced handling of any weapon is liable to get the handler of that weapon hurt/killed. This includes having the weapon taken away and used against them.
But quit on the point that no-one smaller, no-one female and armed is *ever* gonna win. Go read police reports of the hundreds of occasions that armed women/smaller women got the better of their attackers by fighting back. And fuck yes, we got hurt, often really badly, but we're still here.
All you do by scoffing on a thread like this, is make the foolish folks think, "I'll show you." Stop, okay? Be helpful instead.
The following is helpful:
Learn Physical Self-defense (if possible)
Be Aware
Keep Your Distance
Do Not Confront
Run
if you can't run..
Attract General Attention (scream, smash a car window to set off the alarm, *anything*)
Now, none of those involves actual use of a weapon, does it? That's helpful.

Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence
(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)To this day I don't know if he left off and ran was because I got in a lucky elbow hit, because he was scared somebody WOULD come, because exposing me and groping was all he wanted, or ... who the hell knows. I'm just glad that, for whatever reasons he chose to attack me in the first place, he chose to stop. Because if he hadn't? My screaming and elbowing and frantic reach for my phone didn't do jack shit. The power and advantage were ALL his.
So, do I carry pepper-spray now? Yes. Is it in one hand while I unlock with the other? Yes. Am I aware that that's overly paranoid and crazy? Yes. Am I now hyper-aware of anybody anywhere NEAR me if I'm alone? Yes. Am I aware that this could backfire? Fuck yes.
But damned if I'm caught without anything if it happens again. At least then nobody will be able to say I "didn't try". And maybe, even if it comes out the worse for me, the fact that he'll be marked with it will be enough of a positive ID for the next one not to get away.

But that's the reality of personal safety - you will never be able to ensure 100% perfect reaction to every situation and never being a victim of crime. It just doens't exist.
