Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence
(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)To this day I don't know if he left off and ran was because I got in a lucky elbow hit, because he was scared somebody WOULD come, because exposing me and groping was all he wanted, or ... who the hell knows. I'm just glad that, for whatever reasons he chose to attack me in the first place, he chose to stop. Because if he hadn't? My screaming and elbowing and frantic reach for my phone didn't do jack shit. The power and advantage were ALL his.
So, do I carry pepper-spray now? Yes. Is it in one hand while I unlock with the other? Yes. Am I aware that that's overly paranoid and crazy? Yes. Am I now hyper-aware of anybody anywhere NEAR me if I'm alone? Yes. Am I aware that this could backfire? Fuck yes.
But damned if I'm caught without anything if it happens again. At least then nobody will be able to say I "didn't try". And maybe, even if it comes out the worse for me, the fact that he'll be marked with it will be enough of a positive ID for the next one not to get away.

But that's the reality of personal safety - you will never be able to ensure 100% perfect reaction to every situation and never being a victim of crime. It just doens't exist.
