Re: Suprisingly decent article on self defence

Yeah, that's a huge problem with telling people to scream for help. Regular citizens won't come, not because they're evil, but because they don't want to put themselves in danger, and because they expect Another Person to do it first. The Bystander Effect can be lethal, and it's sad, but one should never expect anybody to come to their defense or advise other people to expect it, it's nice the few times it does happen, but never to be relied upon.

Your chances of a citizen coming to help, or the guy deciding to run are orders of magnitude better than fucking about with a weapon. And it's much less likely to end badly than a weapon is.

But that's the reality of personal safety - you will never be able to ensure 100% perfect reaction to every situation and never being a victim of crime. It just doens't exist.

I didn't say anything about a weapon, just that it's not wise to tell people to cry for help without also telling them the possibility of bystanders doing jackshit. Just like it's not wise to tell people to carry a weapon without telling them the possibility of it being used against them. As you just said, there is no perfect precaution, and adults have to make their own decisions about what chances they're willing to take. Harping statistics doesn't help when you still end up the unlucky bastard on the extreme end of the curve, considering that, statistically speaking, you're far more likely to be attacked by a friend than a stranger, and orders of magnitude more likely to die of heart disease than a mugging, but we're discussing it anyway.
