How much fic can you write in a few weeks? I'd barely be started exploring.

I'm with you on the not looking back, though. I'm a serial fandom monogamist. I feel bad about my abandoned old fandoms. I loved you, I really did.

It takes me weeks just to write one fic, so OP must be churning it out.

But is it any good? If I see one author posting fic after fic I can't help but think they're not bothering with characterization at all and that the quality probably isn't that great.

That was my question too, but I don't know if other writers have to agonize as much over characterization and word choice as much as I do, though. (The answer is probably, yes, they do.)

Or really short fics? I always wondered who was writing those drabbles compulsively and bundling them into 100,000 word multi-fandom wedges on AO3. I don't see the attraction either to writer or read.

Short fics don't satisfy me at all any more. I started with drabbles challenges, it was fun. I wouldn't want to do them any more.

Those multi fandom drabbles irritate me. I stuck all my junky churned out fics in a series, not a chaptered fic, so people wouldn't get excited by a long fic for their fandom that is actually a multi fandom mess. I prefer long fic too.

I can only enjoy them if they're sort of poetic/contemplative - but to be frank, many people think they're writing it that way, while only few of them do.

Same here. I'm still writing a PWP one-shot that I started earlier this month. It takes me forever. :/

Same here. My obsession is like a build-up. It's also not unusual for me to spend several weeks on a fic, even a one-shot.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but at my peak of involvement in various fandoms, I've gone through bursts of activity where I can put out one 2000-5000 word fic every four or five days, often with smaller 500-1500 word ficlets interspersed between them. I write in single bursts, though, and most of my stories are posted the night they're written, with a couple of run-throughs for editing. It's actually fairly rare for me to let stories sit for longer than that: it usually only happens when they're actively fighting me.

Some of those bursts of activity have gone on for months, others have fizzled within a couple of weeks. I usually stay in live fandoms for about a year to a year and a half at a time, while having a few older, quieter fandoms in the background more constantly.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I do the same for my shortish fics. I write about 1-2000 words in one night, and post, instant gratification, or about 6-8000 in perhaps ten days, the same--bam, ahhhh.

In three weeks, that's what, seven fics? I don't think seven fics can be called a flood, as the OP describes it.

I suppose it could be a flood in a really tiny fandom where there were only a dozen fics prior.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, generally a couple of longer fics and as many kinkmeme fills as I can. Sometimes I'll have been kind of interested in the fandom for a bit and have a file of wips to finish off once I'm really into it, other times I'll just churn out one long fic from scratch. *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2014-06-04 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I can think of several writers like that: two of my very favorites have exactly that behavior, except they often write really good long fics (often over 5K, and more rarely over 10K). But they both have a very short attention span and once they have left a fandom, they never return...

I don't think this is anything to apologize about - speaking as a reader-only? I strongly believe fic writers should write for their own enjoyment, and my enjoyment and that of their other readers is only icing on the cake, not an obligation or a requirement for the writer, because after all, if I dislike a fic, I can just close the window and move on to a different story, no harm done!

So if this is your approach, sort of like hit and run when you lose interest, good for you: I never assume someone writing a good story (or several) in my fandom is any guarantee they'll stay churning out good stories for me for the next few years.

I think it is a lot more important that you keep writing characters and specific fandoms because you enjoy it. You, not me. Because trust me, I can tell when a writer is bored with a specific character or fandom, and I'd rather you did not waste your time so unproductively when you could be writing different characters while enjoying yourself.

That seems like pretty normal behavior, tbh.

As long as you enjoy yourself it doesn't really matter. Do you finish the fics? I hope you do, but at any rate at least you've left behind something for others to read. That's cool.

My 'obsessively into this' stage usually lasts anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, but I'm quite the fandom hopper as well. I'll typically come back at some point, but I go through periods of interest...can't help it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
OP. Yeah. The only fandom I have wips left in is one I was in for about 2 years, many many moons ago. Since then the longest I've stayed anywhere has been about a month. I tend to be into smaller fandoms though, so maybe there's just less to bounce off and stay interested in.

I don't loose all interest in a fandom once the initial pull is gone but I do typically hop away for a bit and come back to look for fic every once in a while. It depends on how quickly I get hoiked by something else I suppose.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved that bridge until Jim tossed himself over it. Now I can't bear the sight of it. I will go miles out of my way to avoid having to cross it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-01 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
That's okay, OP. You've contributed something to a fandom, and people have enjoyed the bits you've left behind.

I'm more of a cyclical fandom person, myself. I phase in and out of my favorite fandoms, occasionally adding a new one to the mix (like the one I'm active in now? I was last active in roughly ten years ago. But I came back! XD).

Nothing wrong with having a few really strong ideas and no interest in hanging around after you've got it out of your system. But sometimes when I see a really interesting WIP I will check out the author and see that they abandoned WIPs in all their previous fandoms. I don't understand that...

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really care as long as all your fics are finished. I hate it when I'm left hanging on a fic, and that's why I try not to read WIP's.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
If you come and go without feeling the need to make any "I'm leaving the fandom" annoucements, then I'm good with the way that you operate. (Not that you need my approval, but this is FS after all.)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I tend to want to go through a lot of the canon before writing anything, but then if I get into it I can write several fics a week, and usually last in the fandom thru months or years.
