This is so obviously a troll that there's not really any point in arguing about it (even if you actually believe that it is impossible to be a sincere Christian and not hate gays, the way you're saying it clearly indicates that what you really want is to get into a massive fight about it).

So I'm just going to call you a dickhead and move on.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
not OP, but I kind of agree

I don't think it's impossible to be a sincere christian and tolerant of gays - I think it's possible to sincerely believe in Christ without clinging to biblical literacy - but I do think it's supremely disingenuous to say someone isn't a ~true christian~ because they're anti-gay. Sorry, but the vast majority of Christian practitioners and teachings were explicit and constitutively anti-gay for a hell of a lot longer than they were liberal and welcoming.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah but, one, I don't think that's what OP is saying. I think OP wants to get into a fight about whether the Bible, and Christianity more generally, are inherently anti-gay.

and, two, I think when people say that being anti-gay isn't truly Christian, they're not really making a historical claim in the first place, but a political argument about the way things should be, true principles of Christianity, etc.

DA

I also think OP is just trolling because religion always brings the wank to FS these days.

And that completely ignores the culture [and the fact that other non-christian cultures were that way as well].

Also, this ignores the idea that ideas/ideals, and people can change.

but I do think it's supremely disingenuous to say someone isn't a ~true christian~ because they're anti-gay

I wouldn't say that, mainly because it would be super hypocritical given that I've been called ~not a true Christian~ for supporting LGBT and believing in evolution. Heck, I saw a friend tell one of her friends (who I don't know) that she wasn't being a real Christian because she WAS LGBT and also a Christian, and man that was gross.

I don't think this is necessarily a troll, but yeah, the wording was a bit... yeesh. But a lot of people argue that while they don't at all agree with what the Bible says in that context, that is what it says, and people who take it literally are really sticking to beliefs people used to have.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you got the OP wrong. It's not trolling at all. I much agree with what that other person wrote. Whether or not one agrees with Robertson, he is being true to his stated beliefs, and there are very few people who are internally consistent as that.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because OP actually believes what they're saying doesn't mean they're not trolling.

And it's one thing to talk about someone "being true to his stated beliefs" and another to say, and to repeatedly pound in, the stuff about the Bible being inherently anti-gay.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
Are you stupid? Do you even know what trolling is?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
lol you fucking tard, trolling is inherently deliberate

Obviously it's not impossible to be both Christian and not-homophobic, but I don't see where the secret says that it is? It just points out that it's disingenuous to say that being homophobic is unChristian. This is true. The Bible DOES have very clear cut passages about homosexuality being a bad thing. Nobody has to agree of course, but it's a bit silly to pretend those passages don't exist as the basis for why many Christians believe homosexuality is wrong.

Can you cite these clear-cut passages?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

""If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them"

Of course, Leviticus also says pork is bad, so that's why many of us don't take it literally. However, I have friends who do, and yeah, they think it's a sin. Although they still do eat pork.

The S!B takes it over the top into trolling for me.

Again, not arguing on the merits, not saying that the OP is being insincere, but I do think that they're trolling and what they really want is a fight about whether or not the Bible is inherently anti-gay. They're not just pointing it out. They're saying it over and over again in a way that's kind of inflammatory. Daring someone to knock the chip off their shoulder, you know?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-06-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
The same idea has been expressed previously in religion-wank threads.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
This is not incompatible with it being a troll.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
+1 we're just about to crack 200 comments I would say OP is very pleased with themselves RN

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-06-03 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect we have different definitions of "trolling" then.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Seconded. I was gonna say, I really hate it when non-Christians pretend they understand Christianity better than Christians but you're right, it's probably a troll.

To sum up--the essence of Christianity are the teachings of Christ. Not the Bible--Christ. (Some denominations place much more emphasis on the Bible than others. Typically Roman Catholics and Episcopalians don't focus on it all that much.) Christ didn't say anything about homo-or heterosexuality. But He did explicitly command us to love each other.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Um, no. Maybe your interpretation of Christianity is that it's only the Jesus stuff, but I'd go so far as to say most Christians believe that Christianity is the whole Bible (considered the "Word of God"). You can define and justify your own beliefs, but I don't think you can speak for all Christians.

(also, "loving" someone doesn't necessarily mean agreeing with them. Do you love this Duck Dynasty guy? Would the Jesus you believe in want you to?)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
You can absolutely disagree with people and still love them as a living breathing being. How do you think most people deal with other people every day?!

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Jesus absolutely would expect his followers to love Phil Robertson. I don't think he'd want them to agree with or endorse him, but you doesn't have to do either of those things to love a person.

Remember, Jesus taught people to love their enemies, not to hate them.
