This is so obviously a troll that there's not really any point in arguing about it (even if you actually believe that it is impossible to be a sincere Christian and not hate gays, the way you're saying it clearly indicates that what you really want is to get into a massive fight about it).

No, Christians are supposed to follow the teachings of Christ (New Testament). Not the Old Testament where that "Gays are evil" belief stems from. New Testament on gays? Nothing. Zip. Zilch. And you would think that with Jesus being around Romans who were all about loving whomever, he would have a thing to say about that. But you know what he did say? "Judge not lest ye be judge." That's what a real Christian should do if they say they follow Christ.

Even if the bible in capital letters with absolutely no vagaries or contradictions spelled out things as clearly as people sometimes claim it does I would still think people are assholes for being homophobic. People who can't decide for themselves what's right or wrong are stupid at best and dangerous at worst, though in most cases it seems people like this are homophobics first and foremost, and Christian when it helps them justify their hatred.

The problem with thinking like that is, that these people do not believe everything in the bible, no matter what they claim. Do they believe that that gay people are abominations? Sure. Do they believe that evolution is a lie? Maybe. But do they believe that slavery is okay? Mostly not. Do they believe they cannot wear mixed fabric? Definitly not. And so on. No matter what these people claim, they always cherrypick, which of these outdated rules they want to follow, so no, they don't get respect for that.

And srsly, if they really were to follow every single thing in the bible, they would a) end up in jail really fast and b) still be more ridiculus and horrible, than worthy of respect.

Also you are srsly overestimating how anti-gay the bible is.

It was an idolatry thing, IIRc, hence why the ever-famous Leviticus verse is right smack dab in the middle of other mentions of idolatry. Basically, "Don't sleep together as part of some kind of ritual to a heathen god."

Okay, several things:

I agree I'd rather have someone who is consistent about their beliefs - it doesn't necessarily make me respect them, but at least I can consistently avoid them.

As for the Unchristian thing: people have the right to say that.

Firstly there's a huge tone difference in the Old and New Testament. Old Testament is basically vengeful God while New Testament is basically Jesus spreading message of love.

Secondly there are just a few lines about homosexuality in the Bible, and they're highly open fr interpretation/translation issues.

Thirdly, people pick and choose all the time what parts of the Bible they wish to follow: or we'd still be stoning people for being infidels, marrying war brides or thing eating shrimp is taboo.

It's totally valid for someone who is more Jesus-centric, or has a non-literal interpretation of the Bible to find it un-Christian to be hateful, because they believe in a message of love.

I went to Catholic school until I was 15. Know how often I heard about homosexuality being a sin? Zero times. Now, I don't know what the teachers' personal feeling on it were, but at least they did not believe in spreading hate.


Christianity is not a monolith, and its absolutely valid to criticize the more extremist factions from within.

Well, quite a lot of Christians read the bible as a metaphor, not as something you have to follow to the letter. Also to try to live your life like Jesus did, and as far as I understand he didn't condone hating anyone.

(As to the main point: a) a religion is more than its text, and will change according to culture, time, and place; and b) he's following the Bible on one specific point. If a person's Christianity can be invalidated by finding some prescription in the Bible that s/he isn't following, then I guarantee you that Robertson does not meet your definition -- nor does anyone else)

OP, I just want to tell you thank you for sharing your thoughts in a clear way. You wrote something I have felt for a while about the Christian view of homosexuality. (I write this as a Christian myself.)

Whether or not one likes Phil, he was being the man he always professed to be. Ire at his anti-gay comments should have surprised no one. That's the thing about this "controversy" that bothers me. "So you're mad at a professed Christian preacher for condemning homosexuality because...?"

He's walking his walk and talking his talk. There are few too many people who do that.

The KJV edition of the Bible, which certain groups of Christians (one of which this man belongs to) consider to have spilled forth directly from the lips of the Almighty and revere to the point of idolatry, is very clear that homosexuality is an abomination. The original text? Much less clear. Other translations? Sometimes don't mention homosexuality at all.

"Christians," as a group, believe a bunch of different and often contradictory things, because their source material (and all its various translations) often outright contradicts itself. Cherry-picking and interpretation is necessary for pretty much any Christian, no matter if they're the liberal-progressive type or the fire-and-brimstone "literalist" type. This guy is a "real Christian" - but so are the Christians who find his beliefs unBiblical and morally abhorrent. Because Christianity, as a whole, is not a consistent system. That's how schisms happen in the first place, and both sides merrily accuse one another of not being "real" Christians. From the outside, it's almost amusing to watch. ("Almost" because of how many innocent people are hurt in the process.)

Consistency isn't a virtue when you're consistently wrong, so this guy really doesn't deserve any respect for it. His moral compass is pointed directly up his own ass.
