They felt similar, but also very, very different to me.

This reminded me that I can't wait for my parent's to visit Mom's family later this year because then I get to take my PS3 over there and hook it up to their big ass high-def TV.
I told Mom about that and her response was "Seriously?" my reply was "Hell yeah!"

Never played Flower, or any of the other TGC games iirc, but is this really an off opinion? Hell, I never considered that either of these had a fandom aside from forums and whatnot.

There is something of one over on tumblr - at least that, iirc, there was a fair amount of fanart.

(sorry for late reply, just returning from vacation)
I don't know if it's specifically fandoms or just general mutual agreement on the games' quality, but Journey seemed to get a LOT more attention and praise than Flower or flOw.

My cynical guess is because Flower was full of the saturated colors more often associated with "kiddie" fare and dismissed by most PS3 owners because of that, while Journey adopted the popular "shades of grime" palette and hooked a wider audience.

From kicking around on gaming blogs, I figured that Journey is the one more easily perceived as a gamey game, as opposed to "art game expression thing what is this why am I feeling emotions", since you play as a person(?) rather than something more abstract, and therefore considered more serious fare as a game. This is the one that thatgamecompany put so much money and time into they went bankrupt (not that most people playing the game would generally know that).

But I also found it uncommon that folk would almost make it a choice between any of their games (eg: "this one rocks, the rest are cocks."), but rather prefer one and still call the rest quality.

I enjoyed Flower more too. Journey was great, but I can't replay it the way I can replay Flower.

I loved both of these games too, but I have to disagree with you about Journey being a rehash of Flower.

They are definitely similar and you can easily see where the ideas and themes of Flower influenced the creation of Journey, particularly the emotional voyage through the games, but they diverge in significant ways. Not least of which is the addition of the option ot have interaction with other players in Journey.

In Flower the story is about rejuvenating the earth and city and you are ultimately a hero; while in Journey the story is about going on a journey and learning, perhaps meeting someone on the way, and you are ultimately a wanderer.

Flower has an ending and Journey is cyclical so it never ends.

Journey is also very clearly a metaphor on the stages of life people run through: Your very first steps after birth (tutorial/starting level), learning more of the basics and growing (first/bridge level), playful childhood/learning that you are not always sheltered (second/pink desert level), exuberance of youth (third/surfing level) and getting dumped into the scary world of being grown up and having to stand up for yourself (fourth/sunken city level), growing older and wiser, rising above things and being fully capable to use the things you learned to your advantage (temple/tower level), the aging catching up with you, losing your physical abilities as you age and grow weaker (snow level), struggling on the last few steps (the dorm at the end of the snow level), being released from your suffering and struggles through dying and being reborn (last level and ending -> new game).

Journey is basically the only sequel to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus we're ever gonna get, so that one wins out for me.

WAIT.

How did I have no idea it was a sequel to those games? Holy shit I need to play it RIGHT NOW.

It's not really.

But it's the closest we're ever gonna get.

I tried playing Flower but didn't really get into it. Whereas Journey I have replayed enough times to have lost count now. So I think they are different enough.

For me, the main reason I didn't get into Flower was the controls. I'm terrible at weird motion sensitive stuff.
