OK FINE I SHIP IT

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
this keeps happening to me, where I platoniship something intensely, then all of a sudden some one thing instead makes me actively ship it. Anyone else? Come, share your woes!

First was Donna/Doctor. I hugely friendship them on the show, never wanted them to get together, but then I read this fic where Donna was the one looking after a pocketwatched Doctor in 1913 instead of Martha, and suddenly I was like WOAH this is both hot and sweet, yes all of this please!

This also happened with FitzSimmons on AoS. DAMMIT why do they have to be so cute and joined-at-the-hip?

I only kinda shipped Rick/Michonne on Walking Dead...then I watched the episode of Talking Dead where Reedus said that the camera doesn't really capture all the times Rick looks her up and down, and Yvette Nicole Brown (God love her) did her shipper thing and now I strongly ship it. Doesn't help that they make such a cute family unit with Carl....

You wouldn't happen to have a link to that fic, would you?

I mean, I still friendship Donna/Doctor, but that fic sounds interesting if it's good.

HEre it is!

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/7137912/1/To-Err-is-Human

It's got some...I guess consent issues, since the Doc doesn't have his memory and thinks Donna is his wife, but its not glossed over at all. jsyk!

I don't really ship things platonically, but I do have my "legit" ships and "just for fun, don't really ship it that hard" ships. Sometimes my "don't really ship it" ships turn into "legit" ships because canon gets shippy.

All Babylon 5 ships because that's what I'm about right now:

I started "not really" shipping G'Kar/Garibaldi because I had a super smutty dream about them even though they didn't even interact in the show much, but they did start interacting and it was really cute and also kind of romantic?

Even though the characters in the show shipped Londo/G'Kar I only half-assed shipped it because things were too fucked up between them for even me-- me, who loves the enemies to friends to lovers trope so much-- to get fully on board with. But then things happen and it's really hard not to ship them romantically because fuck, they are so in love.

I didn't ship Jeff/Annie on Community for a long time, but then I kind of suddenly shipped it hard. I don't remember what made me go from liking them as friends to wanting that relationship, but it was pretty sudden.

Same. Like I didn't care about it at all as a ship, or any Community ship really, and then bam! No idea what caused it for me either.

I doubt anyone will know what I'm talking about because I don't think anyone else here watches the show, but...

The only recent example I can think of is Burgess and Atwater from Chicago PD. If you'd asked me before I would've said I liked them well enough as friends/partners but shipping them just didn't even occur to me until the bombing where her niece was injured. He showed up at the hospital to comfort her and I was like "awwww" and then Ruzek (who is her canon love interest and an annoying douchebag) showed up to Share Meaningful Looks with her and I was all "go away Ruzek, she belongs with Atwater" and then it was like "...when did that happen?"

Wait someone else watches this? Haha you're not alone!
I can't decide who I like Burgess with. I really like Atwater, still on the fence whether or not I ship them. It varies from episode to episode.
My only fear is, since they seem to be pushing for Burgess to get a spot in Intellligence, and since Atwater's not a very developed character compared to the others, that they'll kill him off at some point to get him out of the way.

Haha yay!

It's weird, it just came completely out of nowhere for me. I know a lot of people like her with Ruzek but he really annoys me (sorry for bashing him if you like him, he just reminds me of a lot of some guys I know and that's...not a good thing) so when I realized I was apparently shipping her with Atwater I thought "ok, works for me" lol

I hope not! I've seen a lot of people speculating that he'll be killed off but I really like him. Like you said, he's not that developed compared to most of the others, but I'm hoping the little bits we got (like the scene with his niece and nephew/younger siblings?) will be expanded on next season and we can find out more about his family/personal life.

I'm with you FitzSimmons, I totally liked their cute joined-at-the-hip relationship and then during the season I went and started shipping it(I also ship FitzSimmons/Triplett too now as well, just to annoy me further).

Re: OK FINE I SHIP IT

Yeah same. The worst part is, I'll use original characters in something without any romance at all and a reader will make an offhand comment like "I think X/Y are really cute together" or "I think X would be most compatible with Y" and then I'm thinking to myself "SHIT now I ship it too."

Heh. I wish I could blame someone else, personally. I was writing these two with the intent of never ever getting them together.

'... Could you two stop being so cute together?' 'Nope.' 'Didn't think so...*sigh*'

I've done that too.

One time I had character A/B together with B and C being pretty chilly towards each other. And then stuff changed so that B and C were friends by common duty. Then really good friends by common duty. Then "holy cow, probably understand each other more than anyone else" by common duty. Then the UST creeped in...

Character A doesn't exist anymore.

o.o Their love was so pure, it retconned A out?
othellia: (Default)

Re: OK FINE I SHIP IT

[personal profile] othellia 2014-06-04 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure 'pure' is quite the right word. (starts off pure, then B betrays C out of duty which wrecks the relationship, but slowly C comes to see the importance of the greater good as well, even if she can't ever fully forgive B for the betrayal, creating a weird relationship in which they're business like on the surface, care for each other underneath, and then there's a third, even deeper level, and that one is the same as the top surface one. like with pie.)

But yeah. Totally retconned A out. Didn't help that A never really had that many connections and/or chemistry with any of the other characters in the story.

That reminds me of how I have looked at a hugely popular pairing in a fandom and reacted all "Nope. Not interested." until either I ran into something that made me go "...What?" or simply worked through all the other options until I ended up at the monolith pairing.

Two examples of such were Snape/Harry, which I went through every iteration of Harry with older male characters before I got there, and Aragorn/Legolas, where I started at Aragorn/Boromir, wandered into the realm of elfslash, all the way through to Araleg.

have you read this Aragorn/Legolas?

It's super super angsty and stays that way; fair warning if that's not your thing. It's completely my thing, though, LOL.

Ugh, this is me and Ragnar/Athelstan from Vikings. For a while I was OT3'ing Ragnar/Athelstan/Lagertha, then season two happened and I didn't want Ragnar with anyone, then Ragnar couldn't shut up about Athelstan and kept giving him puppy eyes and I said, "Why did you do this to me, show? NO. I didn't want to ship this!" (But I totally ship it.)

I don't usually go for the "they never met in canon" random pairings that fandom comes up with, even when I actually think the characters might get along. And the whole idea of Yuri and Keith in Tiger & Bunny seemed particularly random and not very promising for multiple reasons.

Then someone on the fic meme left a prompt involving them that sparked my interest. So I started writing, with the disclaimer "I don't ship it, but..."

...Couple years later, now I cosplay Lunatic and am constantly hoping I'll find a Sky High cosplayer at the same con at the same time, ideally one who's willing to indulge me in some "princess carry" pictures, and I have no idea how this happened really when it was just THAT ONE SCENARIO.

Heh. The Ocarina version of Zelda and Link, as well as Zelink in general. Got won over by cute fanart. Progress went something like...

"Eh, I don't really like most Zelink. Spirit Tracks and Skyward Sword are the only exceptions."

"...Okay, most of them are pretty cute. I still don't like the Ocarina or Twilight Princess versions, though."

"...Okay, yeah, there's some cute art for the Ocarina version. Still don't ship it, but some art is nice."

"Wait how did I manage to save more Ocarina Zelink than Spirit Tracks?"

"...DAMMIT GUYS STOP BEING ADORABLE YOU ARE MAKING ME EXPERIENCE FEELINGS OVER YOU."

"Okay but seriously they would work together pretty well, they would be good support for each other and would be able to relate to each other's experiences in a way no one else can..."

"Fuck it. I think I ship it."

"I ship the FUCK out of Ocarina Zelink and I like it more than the Spirit Tracks version by now and I've written at least three fics with it."

I think I went the opposite way on one.

I started watching Torchwood when it first was airing on BBCAmerica and shipped Jack/Gwen in the early eps (don't judge me), as it seemed like that was the direction the show was going (because that's usually how American shows go with the lead male/lead female). Then along the way I watched Cyberwoman, and slowly started shipping Jack with Ianto and thought Gwen's relationship with Rhys was cute and sweet (though I do wish she had owned up to the cheating with Owen without retcon), and now, I kind of like Jack and Gwen as a very strong platonic relationship, but I don't think I'd ever ever want to see them get together in any kind of romantic way. I don't think it would be either at them at this point.
