According to the study, yeah.

Would you consider it harassment if you were gay? Or is it different because the slur doesn't apply to you?

I just deleted a similar comment without posting it down in the drunk sex/rape thread because I wasn't sure if it was logically consistent. And this is why. I don't agree with your comment here.

My sister gets called fag sometimes outside (She's a butch lesbian) She finds it offensive because she's really sexually repulsed by guys, and not because it's a gay slur. So, I think it's just different depending on the person.

Um no offense, but I'm pretty sure harassment is much simpler than people here are making it out to be. If it only happened to you once, and you didn't care, then you didn't feel harassed.

They're (the site?) talking about people who don't feel safe or can't make it through a city after work or before work without someone invading their personal space (as in going right up in your face or purposely walking too close or touching you), making them feel threatened or reducing them to a sexual slur or belittling them on a regular basis. It's really aggravating especially if you're having a crappy day to begin with.

I get this kind of stuff every few weeks if I leave the safety of my bus stop for too long or end up on the yucky side of town, so I think I fall under the category of women who get harassed.

I'm interested in the fact that you wouldn't count someone randomly calling you a "fag" as harassment but for this definition.

Hmm. I mean, it's certainly valid for you to define harassment for yourself how you will, but it does seem a bit odd to me that you would base the definition on how the action made you feel, rather than the action itself.

DA

Interesting take on it. I would say I'm a reasonably conventionally attractive woman (ie white, pretty, not thin but not fat, more proportionately curvy) and I've been called a slut several times by guys yelling at me from cars as I was walking on the street - sometimes at night while wearing revealing clothing, and sometimes during the day in everyday clothes. And while I've bever been particularly bothered or hurt by it and thought the guys were idiots, I still consider it street harassment because the intent was to unsettle and insult me, even if it wasn't personal as such. I also call it hatassment because I don't think that sort of behaviour should be normalised. But yeah, that's my take on it.

I wouldn't consider that harassment because I assume they just yelled it and went on their way. I consider harassment to be something that..is pushier or more ongoing. Like if someone yelled Bitch at me as I walked by I'd just be like "what an asshole." then promptly forget. But if they followed me for a bit and kept calling me names, I'd consider that harassment.

+1

Yes, this is what I was thinking. Like, I've had someone yell at me out of a car window as it drove by and I was walking down the street but I don't really consider that harassment because it was just a random asshole being an asshole. But if someone stopped the car and specifically continued to yell things at me, then it would escalate to harassment in my mind.

Yeah, that's is what I define harassment as well.

Same. Pretty much everyone I know has had something yelled at them from a car at some point, male or female.

That'd be how I'd define it too. Harrassment doesn't just mean a passing moment of meanness or rudeness, it means pestering someone.

I consider harassment the one that implies sexual interest because it's usually potentially dangerous... I'm not sure about the kind of harassment that this article pretends to cover.

If someone called me ugly I'd probably not worry about them following me home or anything, it'd probably end there? If someone starts following me around and catcalling with real intention then I'm going to get worried.
